The Bestevaer 45ST is the complete package for a rugged cruising yacht. The aluminum hull allows you to travel anywhere in the world and her bright modern interior appeals to all generations of sailors. The 45ST is a semi-custom design from the reputable KM Yachtbuilders in the Netherlands, which specializes in expedition yachts that thrive sailing all around the world. After a year-long refit at CSR Marine in Seattle, she is on the market again. The refit included a full Victron electrical suite with two separate lithium house battery banks totaling 900 amp hours, 730 watts of solar, air conditioning, and Starlink. The exterior was renewed by sand blasting the deck and house, with the only painted surface now her light gray nonskid. Her sail plan was upgraded to in boom furling, two new furling headsails and new running rigging, all completed by Ballard Sails and Rigging.
Down below is wonderfully bright, modern, and cozy all at the same time with the addition of the new upholstery. Sitting at the base of the companionway, the galley is large, and the simple twin cabin single head (with a separate shower stall) layout keeps the salon big enough for entertaining. She is presently lying in Seattle and awaiting a Pacific cruise or Northwest Passage transit.

Interior description

Beginning in the forward stateroom, there is a cozy 6’ 5” long twin bunk tucked onto the port side of the hull and two LED reading lights. The 10” diameter porthole, and 22” square Lewmar overhead hatch with Ocean Air sunshade and screen let light and fresh air into the space. The bright white painted overhead and hull compliment the custom mahogany cabinetry. The twin berth has a refreshed look with new upholstery and bunk cushions for a good nights rest. A cabinet at the forward end of the space has shelves and one to starboard provides space for hanging items. Two drawers with soft close glides are built in below the bunk for more storage. Mounted on the starboard side of the hull is the radiator style cabin heater. Thesolid mahogany cabin door has an inlaid mirror and separates the space from the main salon.

The main salon is bright and open with good ventilation and 6’ of headroom. The overhead hatch has a built-in Ocean Air bug screen and shade, and Göit opening portlights with curtains allow good ventialtion for hot summer days. Two more 10” diameter portholes give a view of the water while underway and have white covers when needed. Along the portside of the salon is an L-shaped seating area with a removable solid mahogany table. While underway, it secures down into the cabin sole but can be moved to access the tank space for projects. There is a view of the freshly painted carbon Selden mast and to port are several shelves for storage or boat documents.. On the starboard side of the salon is a 6’ 2” linear settee that makes an excellent sea berth with refreshed upholstery. Overhead, a brushed stainless handrail provides a solid handhold for moving around the cabin. There is storage below the settee.

The large U-shaped galley is aft on the port side and is open to the main salon. Black Corian countertops complete the polished modern interior and are easy to clean. On centerline, there is a double basin stainless sink with pressurized hot and cold water with a  new single action faucet and a pressurized spigot for filtered drinking water. There are two countertop access hatches to the refrigerator and outboard to port is the three-burner propane stove with oven. There is a stainless grab bar that protects the cook while underway. Just behind the stove is space for oils, spices, and dishes. To the left of the stove is a countertop and three drawers below for more storage. Two opening portlights and an overhead hatch keep air moving through the galley.

Opposite the galley on the starboard side is the forward-facing navigation station. A lift-up chart tabletop provides space for commonly used boat items and there is room for larger items such as binoculars or reference books outboard. The 12v DC panel is clearly labeled with four gauges for the water and fuel levels and is artfully concealed behind custom cabinetry. A Victron battery monitor, AC power/control and inverter/charger control readout are accessible here too.

Just aft of the nav station is the head with a separate shower stall. There is a Dometic electric flush toilet, built-in cabinet for storage and radiator style heater that doubles as a towel heater. The shower stall is generous with a mahogany seat that flips down when needed. Outboard on the hull is a large heated wet locker for gear.

All the way aft on the port side behind the galley is the guest stateroom. The solid mahogany door provides privacy from the rest of the salon and contains the heat from the cabin heater on chilly mornings. The double berth is 6’ 10” long and has new 8” thick custom foam mattress. To starboard is a hanging locker with a storage shelf on top. There is more storage under the head of the bunk to fit a small cooler, shoes or other quick grab items. The inboard bulkhead of the bunk allows access to the port side of the engine for maintenance work and storage is outboard.

A moderately sloped four step companionway leads from the main salon to the cockpit. The middle two steps flip up to provide access to the new air conditioner unit. The hard dodger provides protection to the companionway from wind and spray and the integrated hatch board is always in place to seal the cabin at a moments notice.

Hull and Deck

This Bestevaer 45ST was built with a fixed keel and single spade rudder. The ST refers to the modern, straight bow that distinguishes many Bestevaers from other aluminum high latitude sailboats. This gives her a long waterline and the fixed keel with high ballast ratio delivers excellent sailing performance. NEXA was recently brought downto bare aluminum  with Pettit GA red ViVid bottom paint.

Forward, on deck, she is fitted with carbon bowsprit on the starboard side and the anchor roller is to port. A watertight hatch allows access to the anchor and forepeak storage locker and is fitted with a watertight bulkhead.

From bow to stern, in total there are eight integral aluminum bollards (a version of a cleat), and the decks are wide, flat, and easily navigated. While moving about, the 7” bulwarks and 31” stanchions keep the decks safe while underway. In her recent refit at CSR marine, her decks and cabin top were sandblasted and re-coated with a fresh white paint and non-skid. Her modern in boom furling mainsail and furling staysail and genoa sail plan makes the boat manageable to sail solo yet, performance oriented.

The cockpit is long, low, and is sheltered by the fixed doghouse that also protects the companionway from spray and wind. A large fixed awning provides sun and rain protection to the aft end of the cockpit. The tiller steering means getting to any of the six cockpit winches is a bit easier than moving around a wheel and the cockpit benches are over 6’ long. The two primary winches are electric, and two forward winches service the line clutches and two service the spinnaker sheets, when in use. The starboard cockpit bench has gas hinges to support the heavy duty hatch while working in the machinery space. A watertight panel gives engine access and through the aft watertight bulkhead there is access to the watermaker and steering system.
