The Cal 2-46 followed in the wake of the venerable Cal 40, a boat that revolutionized the design of racer/cruisers. Bill Lapworth, designer of the Cal 40, conceived of the Cal 2-46 as a comfortable cruiser and load carrier with moderate draft and a good turn of speed. Easily handled by a couple, many 2-46s have sailed far and wide. Under a previous owner, Twisted Journey sailed to New Zealand.
Twisted Journey has been extensively refit by her knowledgeable owner since 2008. Upgrades include a new Perkins diesel engine, new mast, standing rigging, chainplates, furler and sails, full rewire and new electrical panels, updated inverter/charger, sailing instruments and electronics, replumbed fresh water system, hydronic cabin heater, upholstery, thru hulls, arch and davits. The list goes on. Nearly every system has been replaced and all work has been done with an eye towards reliability and ease of maintenance.

Interior Accommodations
The accommodations aboard Twisted Journey are directed toward comfort, whether crossing an ocean or exploring inside waters. Her interior is finished with off-white laminate bulkheads and teak trim and cabinetry. Two staterooms will easily accommodate friends and family. The raised deck house provides excellent visibility and her load carrying capacity and tankage are suitable for long distance cruising. Hatches and opening ports deliver good ventilation and her Webasto hydronic diesel heater warms the crew.
Starting forward is the guest stateroom. The cabin is configured with a v-berth and additional berth above to port. There are four drawers below the berth, a shelf to starboardand a bureau with four drawers aft. A large hanging locker is aft of the bureau. There are reading lights above both bunks, two Caframo fans and overhead lights in the cabin top. Access to the chain locker is forward of the berth.
The forward head is opposite the hanging locker to starboard. A stainless steel sink is set in a vanity with locker below. Forward of the vanity is the head and a large sliding door cabinet is outboard of the sink and head.
Two steps lead up to the pilothouse. Nine large windows create a bright space and provide excellent visibility. Forward and to port is the nav station with radar/chartplotter, sailing instruments, autopilot control, stereo, VHF and AIS display. Aft of the nav station is a U-shaped dinette with a folding table. A ottoman slides into place to provide seating at the starboard side of the table. Along the starboard side of the salon there is a shelf with storage below. Cabinet faces are fitted with back lit stained glass.
The galley is located two steps down from the pilothouse in the passageway to the aft stateroom. There is ample counter space both inboard and outboard. A deep two bin stainless sink is set in the inboard counter. Sliding door lockers with shelves above provide good storage for dishes and other items. There are drawers and a trash bin located below in addition to access to the engine compartment. At the outboard counter, there is a deep top loading refrigeration compartment (currently non functional) and the Force 10 three burner stove and oven. Outboard there is additional storage in sliding lockers. A front loading fridge with freezer is located just forward of the galley.
The aft stateroom provides truly comfortable and spacious quarters. A double berth is to port with six drawers under and a straight settee is to starboard. There is a hanging locker at the forward end of the settee. Five opening ports and a large hatch provide excellent ventilation and light. Bulkhead, reading and overhead lights are well placed and there are two 12v fans.
The ensuite head is forward and to port of the berth with Jabsco manual toilet, stainless steel sink set into a vanity with locker below, and large outboard cabinet with teak doors. The shower is integral to the space.

Deck and Hull
Designed by Bill Lapworth and built by the Jensen Marine in Costa Mesa California, the Cal 2-46 according to an early brochure was engineered for “maximum impact strength” utilizing heavy fiberglass laminate and foam core in the hull which provides excellent insulation. The deck is cored with plywood and Low E Class A White insulation has been added in the saloon overhead. The keel is integral to the hull with encapsulated ballast. The large spade rudder gives excellent control of the vessel when underway. With slight overhangs, spoon bow and transom with moderate reverse sheer, the hull design is nicely proportioned. The large deck house begins just forward of the mast and steps down to a center cockpit and aft trunk cabin. The cockpit is protected by a hard dodger that is strong enough to stand on. There are two opening windows in the hard dodger and it is fitted with lights in the overhead. The chartplotter is mounted on a arm that allows it to be viewed from various watch positions. Autopilot controls, sailing instruments, chartplotter, AIS and forward looking sonar displays are all accessible from the protection of the dodger. There is storage in the cockpit coamings and in a large locker at the stern. A custom arch and swimstep have been designed and installed to make the best use of the space at the stern. The arch features dinghy davits, outboard motor lift, antenna and wind generator mounts and paddleboard racks. A dive ladder fits into a bracket on the swimstep.
