Named “Best Full Size Cruiser” and “Overall Winner” of Cruising World’s 1997 Boat of the Year Awards, the Sabre 402 is a cruiser-racer for the sailor who wants the perfect blend of speed and comfort. YANKEE III’s elegant arrangements offer two comfortable private staterooms; a V-berth cabin forward and double berth cabin aft sleeping a total of seven including salon berths. Her cherry interior is warm and bright as a result of 6’5” headroom in the salon, white headliner and large cabin windows that provide excellent visibility. Low profile accordion style fabric window covers are on all ports and windows. The cabin sole is a traditional teak and holly ply finished bright, and the louvered cabinet doors, superbly fitted cherry veneer and cherry hardwood joinery work, are top rate examples of the craftsmanship that has set Sabre apart as one of the world’s top builders of quality boats. Sabre’s care and attention to detail is evident right down to the finish work on the wood trimmed bug screens for the hatches.

The forward cabin sleeping arrangement is a traditional v-berth. Smartly conceived, this berth is set back far enough to give enough room at the foot of the bed to give two occupants room to move their feet without constantly bumping into each other. Two drawers and a cabinet are located under the v-berth, and additional storage is available in three separate compartments accessed by lifting the cushions and board. Aft of the v-berth to port is a bench seat, perfect for sitting to get dressed. Above and outboard is a large louvered cabinet with two shelves. Across from the seat to starboard are two bookshelves with drawers, a cabinet below and a full size cedar-lined hanging locker. Facing aft form the v-berth is a sink on centerline with a mirror. There are three overhead hatches and two opening ports for excellent ventilation and light. Two reading lamps and overhead lights provide additional light.
Just aft of the forward cabin is the main salon. The L-shaped settee to port that converts to a double berth and straight settee to starboard provide a comfortable place to relax below on a rainy day. A cherry drop-leaf table is mounted on the centerline between the two settees. When the leaves are up the table reaches both sides, allowing seating for up to six while dining. Above and outboard of both settees are bookshelves and louvered cabinets. There are storage nooks behind the seatbacks. A large overhead hatch and four ports offer good ventilation for this space. The hatches combined with the large windows provide excellent light and visibility below. Overhead lights, independently controlled reading lamps located at each end of the settees, and courtesy lights at the base of the cabin provide a variety of lighting options. The salon offers an excellent combination of form and function. It is comfortable, warm and a great place to hang out but also works when entertaining many guests for a meal.
Aft of the main salon is the forward facing nav station to starboard and the U-shaped galley to port. The nav station is large by today’s standards and offers all the convenience and function one would hope for in a modern sailing vessel. The VHF and B&G sailing displays are within easy reach. A serial port connector feeds information to those wanting the aid of PC in navigation. The nav table lifts for great storage of navigation aids and there are three drawers and a cabinet just forward and outboard of the table for nice storage of winch handles and other sailing necessities. A custom electrical panel controls the AC and DC electrical systems..
YANKEE III’s large, u-shaped galley sits directly across from the nav station on the port side. Excellently designed for use in a seaway, the u-shape Corian counter arrangement allows the cook to “wedge in” when things get bumpy. The large windows in the galley and salon provide light and sight for the cook to look out and see the world. Starting outboard and along the hull side in the galley are two louvered cabinets with an open locker nestled in between. The three-burner Force 10 stove with oven, top and side loading refrigerator and freezer are located along the hull side of the working surface. The refrigeration spaces are large spaces capable of providing fresh food for the long haul. Ample open counter space is available forward with space for storage of pots and pans over the oven.. Completing the U on the inboard side of the galley is a dual stainless sink with hot and cold pressure water. A hand pump has also been installed for fresh water. Below the counter are two sets of drawers and a pull out compartment for the garbage bin. .
The spacious head with separate shower stall is to starboard and just aft of the nav station. This is a good sized head with storage in three cabinets; two above the sink and one below. The toilet is a Raritan manual version. Counter tops are elegant Corian trimmed with cherry. The separate shower stall with sump pump is aft of the head. A teak bench runs along the hull side and a separate door allows access to the shower stall from the aft quarter cabin. The retractable articulating shower head mounts outboard. The shower also includes a wet locker for storage for foulweather gear, sea boots and other wet gear. Two hatches and an opening port provides excellent ventilation to the space.
Located to port and aft of the galley, the aft cabin could easily be labeled a master stateroom in its own right. The large double berth comfortably sleeps two and there is a padded bench seat perfect for getting dressed. Two large drawers, a good size shelf and a hanging locker provide storage space for owners and guests. The hull sides are beautifully trimmed with wooden battens. Above the berth and outboard are three cabinets running the length of the berth, with a narrow shelf just in front of the cabinets. Above the cabinets is also shelf space perfect for long items such as rolls of charts.
