Brewer 35

Brewer 35 - PATINA

Low maintenance. Safe. Manageable. Comfortable. These were clearly central considerations when PATINA’s original owners commissioned Ted Brewer to design this exceptional 35-foot cruising sailboat. The result is a compact, purpose-built offshore cruiser that combines the forgiving sailing characteristics of Brewer’s cutaway full keel and distinctive “Brewer Bite” with the strength, durability and repairability of an aluminum hull. Her 3/16-inch 5086 aluminum construction, approximately 7,000 pounds of internal lead ballast, protected rudder and watertight collision bulkhead provide a level of structural security rarely found in a boat of this size. Just as importantly, PATINA was designed to be maintained and repaired by her owners. The bare aluminum deck and cabintop, welded mounting plates for nearly all deck hardware, excellent systems access and remarkably well-documented installations eliminate many of the maintenance challenges found on more conventional cruising boats.

Her 35-foot size was carefully chosen to be manageable by two people without sacrificing the comfort, storage or systems necessary for extended cruising. PATINA’s mechanical spaces are exceptional for a boat of her size, with excellent access to the engine, fuel system, refrigeration, water heater, holding tank and other critical systems. Her systems were selected and installed with an emphasis on simplicity, accessibility and redundancy, including both primary and backup autopilots, a Monitor windvane, substantial electrical capacity, solar charging and a comprehensive inventory of spare parts and tools. Detailed schematics and documentation accompany the installations, making the boat unusually approachable for an owner who intends to cruise rather than simply maintain a yacht.

Below decks, PATINA feels like a genuine cruising boat rather than a 35-foot boat trying to imitate a larger yacht. The Pullman berth, well-appointed U-shaped galley, excellent navigation station and functional head provide comfortable accommodations for a couple, while thoughtful storage is found throughout the interior. The cherry and maple interior is warm and practical, with modular joinery that can be removed for access to the hull and systems. Above deck, the spacious cockpit is protected by a hard dodger and tall coamings, while the large sail and chain locker, cockpit lockers and deck storage provide ample room for sails, cruising gear, spares and provisions.

PATINA’s history reflects the purpose for which she was built. Her original owners cruised the Pacific Northwest and prepared her for extended offshore cruising. Her second owners continued cruising the Salish Sea before taking her south to Mexico for a season and subsequently returning her to Seattle. Since 2023, she has received an impressive program of maintenance and upgrades, including new electronics, solar and charging equipment, standing rigging, windlass and anchor chain, alternator, refrigeration, portlights and hatches, rudder bearings, pumps and numerous other systems.

Perhaps most importantly, PATINA is being offered as a true cruising package. Extensive spare parts, tools, maintenance supplies, emergency equipment, canvas, multiple anchors and rodes, offshore communications equipment and a remarkable assortment of cruising gear are included. She has been thoughtfully prepared, actively used and substantially updated.

Interior Accommodations

Below decks, PATINA’s interior arrangement was thoughtfully designed as a long-term cruising vessel with comfortable accommodations for a couple and excellent systems access. She will sleep four in her Pullman style double berth and salon settees. Ventilation is excellent - provided by two large hatches, eight opening ports, five deck vents and two Hella Turbo fans. The interior is finished in varnished cherry with maple trim and white headliner and cabinsides. Lockers are fitted with cane fronts which provide great ventilation. The cabin sole is easy to maintain Lonseal and all inspection hatches trimmed with cherry. Her interior joinery is completely modular and is easily removed for access to the hull for repairs or systems access. All components have the ability to leave the vessel through the companionway without being cut down to size.

Forward is a Pullman style double berth oriented to port which provides a comfortable sleeping arrangement whether in port or on an offshore passage. There is storage below in two large lockers and additional storage space that may be accessed by lifting the mattress. Above and to port along the hull side are two lockers and a bookshelf. There is a reading lamp at the head of the berth. A watertight bulkhead forward of the berth with emergency access hatch separates the cabin from the sail locker. Forward and to starboard is a large hanging locker. Aft of the hanging locker is a long counter with two large top opening lockers. There are two small lockers below the counter and two larger lockers above along the hull side. A hatch, deck vent, two opening ports and Hella Turbo fan provide excellent ventilation.

Aft, the salon arrangement features an L-shaped settee to port and a straight settee to starboard. The table folds against the mast to give more floor space. Storage around the salon is well conceived and easily accessed. Above and outboard the starboard settee there is a long bookshelf forward and a locker with two shelves aft. There are two large lockers behind the settee seatbacks and a large locker below the aft end of the settee. To port, there are three lockers with shelves above the settee along the hull side. Three lockers behind the seatbacks and a large space below the forward inboard end of the L-shaped settee add additional storage. At the aft end of the settee, there are two lockers - one tall locker that is perfectly configured as a bookshelf for guidebooks, manuals and sailing directions. On the centerline aft of the salon table is the Sigmar diesel bulkhead heater. A stainless post adjacent provides an excellent handhold and prevents one from grabbing the heater stack in case of being thrown about the cabin in a seaway. Two additional handholds run along the cabintop, although PATINA’s cabin space is generally configured so that one is never far from a good place to brace yourself. Three reading lamps and an overhead light illuminate the space. The opening hatch, four opening ports and Hella turbo fan provide ventilation.

At the starboard aft end of the salon is the outboard facing nav station. The navigator's seat swings away below the table when not in use and has a lock to keep it in place. The top of the table folds back to reveal a cleverly arranged computer desk. There is also a divided shelf for navigation tools. Outboard, the Tank Tender, battery monitor, VHF and SSB radios, and stereo receiver are mounted flush. There is an LED chart spotlight and a 12 volt accessory outlet as well as a small drawer. At the aft end of the table are the Blue Seas AC and DC distribution panels, bilge pump switches and Weems & Plath clock and barometer. Two lockers below the nav table provide additional storage.

PATINA’s U-shaped galley is compact and well configured for cooking underway. At the forward inboard end is a well-executed trash compartment with an opening in the counter. Adjacent to port is the deep stainless steel sink with hot and cold fresh water and a raw water foot pump. Below is a large locker with shelves. To port, there is open counter space with access to a large top opening dry storage locker. Below are three drawers and a locker. A built-in bookshelf is located forward of the counter to port. Above the forward end of the galley is a large locker with two doors. Outboard along the hull side, there is a large locker with shelves, a sliding door locker with shelves, and a smaller locker aft. The gimbaled Force 10 two burner stove/oven is oriented athwartships. A locker below provides storage for pots and pans. The aft galley counter has an integral cutting board that lifts on hinges to provide access to the top loading fridge and freezer. Aft of the counter is a sliding door locker. Above, there is a smaller locker with shelves. There is an additional locker below the counter at the level of the cabin sole.

The head is adjacent to the companionway to starboard. All surfaces are easy to maintain white painted fiberglass. A shower is integral to the space. The head is mounted at an angle facing inboard and aft. At the aft outboard end of the compartment is a small counter with sink and faucet. There are two lockers below the counter. Numerous other small lockers provide well organized storage space - and all are gasketed. Outboard of the counter is a large sliding door locker with shelves. There are mirrors mounted on the forward and aft bulkheads. Hooks provides a place to hang towels or wet foul weather gear. An opening port and deck vent provide ventilation.

A door in the aft end of the head compartment provides access to PATINA’s excellent engine room and mechanical space. The fuel tanks and filters, fuel cleaner, hot water heater, refrigeration system, isolation transformer, holding tank and assorted other systems are contained in this space and easily reached. There is excellent access to the aft end of the Yanmar diesel, muffler, transmission and propeller shaft. The front of the engine may be access by removing the companionway stairs, and can also be accessed from above if necessary via the removable cockpit sole. The space and access to systems is exceptional for a boat of this size.

DECK & HULL:

PATINA’s underbody configuration is a full keel with cutaway forefoot and a "Brewer Bite". The rudder is hung off the stern and is protected by a skeg. Her hull is constructed of 3/16 inch 5086 aluminum plating with stiffeners of 6061-T6 aluminum. Frames are spaced every 30 inches and there is no point where stringers are more than 7 inches apart. Her keel is aluminum with approximately 7,000 pounds of poured lead ballast. The hull is insulated with Armaflex closed-cell hull insulation sheets covered with a second layer of Thinsulate insulation. The engine room insulated with E-A-R Techonologies R613-25-10-75RM sound and heat insulation. The hull is painted with gray Awlcraft with a light blue boot stripe. There is a rub rail along the hull side.

The deck and cabintop are bare aluminum with Raptor Deck foam nonskid. Nearly all deck hardware (winches, cleats, stanchion bases, etc) is attached to welded plates on deck to eliminate potential leaks. A slotted aluminum toe rail runs most of her length. Tall stanchions and double stainless steel lifelines surround the deck. There are boarding gates to port and starboard. Forward is a substantial aluminum double anchor roller. Aft is the large Bomar hatch that provides access to an oversized sail and chain locker. Hand rails on dodger and cabintop to port and starboard are welded aluminum with plastic trim. Stainless steel granny bars provide support while working at the mast. Shrouds are led outboard and the genoa is sheeted to a track on the rail. There is a staysail track on the cabintop.

PATINA’s cockpit and companionway are protected by a low profile aluminum hard dodger. The side windows open to increase ventilation. Tall seatbacks provide a comfortable and secure feeling. There are open storage spaces in the cockpit coaming to port and starboard. Cockpit lockers are all locking with gaskets. The port side locker is designed to hold a valise liferaft in addition to other safety items. The aft port locker holds two propane tanks. The aft starboard locker is open storage and houses wash down hose. To starboard is a shallow line locker.
