Alajuela 38 a Proven Offshore Cruiser with Exceptional Build Quality
The impressive Lone Gull is a full keel passage making/cruising sailboat and her sweet traditional curves offer splendid sea kindly qualities. A stout cutter rig provides options in sail selection. The Alajuela 38 MKI follows the lines of the well-known William Atkin’s design Ingrid with a reassuring beauty. Built for comfort at sea and offering moderate speed under sail, her comfortable, open interior plan is well suited to extended cruising, while her proven offshore pedigree inspires confidence in both heavy weather and light airs. With a circumnavigation beneath her keel, Lone Gull has demonstrated herself to be a safe and comfortable cruising yacht. Thoughtfully arranged for shorthanded sailing with Monitor self-steering gear (wind and electrical), two speed primary winches, lazy jacks for the mainsail, and a Schaefer roller-furling genoa make sail handling straightforward and efficient.
Lone Gull has benefited from a succession of dedicated owners who sailed her extensively and maintained her with exceptional care. Original Owner was a shipwright who purchased and brought Lone Gull to Port Townsend Washington and finished her interior there.
Second owner made many upgrades which included electronics and installation of a Monitor windvane. Cruising included South East Alaska and three circumnavigations of Vancouver Island.
Current owner purchased her in July 2013. Lone Gull was kept in Eastern Washington (Columbia River) from 2009 through purchase in 2013. The dry climate and freshwater environment were beneficial to the life of Lone Gull. She completed a circumnavigation June 2022 – July 2023. Her graceful sheer continues to turn heads at the dock and under sail. This is wonderful opportunity to own a splendid cruising yacht to set off on your own yachting dreams.

Hull Construction
Alajuela Yacht Corp. was a boutique American sailboat builder. Founded by Mike Riding and Rod Jermain in Huntington Beach, California. Inspired by classic cruising designs, particularly William Atkin's double-enders. The builder focused on seaworthiness, traditional aesthetics, and heavy hand-laid fiberglass construction for passage making.
The construction and engineering of Lone Gull is extremely strong. The hull is laid up by hand in a one-piece mold with alternating layers of mat and roving with ½ in thickness at the sheer then thickening to ¾ inch at the bilge
The deck is sandwiched with balsa and foam coring and the hull to deck joint is very stout, the laminates turn up to form the 5-inch bulwarks that surround the deck with teak cap rails screwed to the top of the bulwarks. The side decks are 22 in (56 cm) wide and have a non-skid surface, The cockpit coamings, lazarettes hatches and cockpit seating are made of teak.
Deck Lay Out
Lone Gull has a cutter rig, a spooned raked stem with a teak bowsprit, a canoe transom and a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller. The boat has a draft of 6.00 ft (1.83 m) with a displacement of 27,000lbs.
Beginning in the stern there is a Monitor windvane for self-steering. The rudder is mounted to the full keel by sturdy pintles and gudgeons. Two solar panels are mounted port and starboard to the stern rail. The stern lazarette provides vented storage for two propane tanks and extra lines.
The comfortable, safe cockpit has deep coamings and a self-draining footwell. The cockpit is protected by a custom-made dodger and has a bimini for sun protection. Repeaters for navigation and weather instruments are above the companion way hatch. Engine gauges are at the forward end of the cockpit well. Teak (synthetic) matt installed in cockpit well for sure footing.
Moving forward there is a boom crutch for storing the boom at anchor. The side decks are clean and clear for ease of working on deck at sea. For sailing at the mast there are two two-speed winches for the halyards and two two-speed primary winches for the sheets are on the cockpit comings. The main sheet and traveler are on the coach roof with the main sheet led to the cockpit with a dedicated winch. Tracks and snatch blocks are provided port and starboard for the genoa and the staysail sheet leads. Walking forward the three chainplates for the standing rigging are solidly through bolted to the hull. Looking aloft is a single spreader rig with a radar mounted above the spreaders.
The foredeck is wide with a teak hatch dropping to the forward cabin. The Moritz Manual anchor windlass with chain rode is supporting two CQR anchors. The hanked-on staysail is at the bow with a strong pelican hook and out on the bowsprit a Schaefer roller furler deploys the genoa with ease.
