Her powerful rig, deep cockpit, and robust construction make her equally suited for crossing oceans or exploring coastal waters. With thoughtful design details, excellent storage, and systems engineered for ease of handling, the Oyster 485 has earned a reputation as one of the most desirable yachts in her size range, appealing to sailors seeking both luxury and offshore capability.
DISCOVERY is an immaculately maintained Oyster 485. She has spent much of her life in the Pacific Northwest under the care of very attentive owners. She is actively sailed in the summer season, then stored for the winter under full cover with canvas and sails removed. Her gelcoat sparkles and her the condition of her beautiful interior woodwork appears as a much newer boat.
During her ownership, DISCOVERY is inspected on a bi-weekly basis to check systems, run engine, generator and confirm proper condition. Every winter she undergoes various maintenance needs, systems upgrades and repairs. She is hauled out every spring for detailed cleaning, hull compound, wax, bottom paint, and new anodes. Throughout the year the hull and bottom are scrubbed 2-3 times while in water.

Deck and Hull
The Oyster 485 features a powerful yet manageable deck layout designed for safe and efficient offshore sailing with a shorthanded crew. Her wide side decks, aluminum toe rail, and solid stainless steel handrails provide secure movement around the boat in all conditions.
The furling headsail and slab-reefed mainsail contribute to easy handling on long passages or when coastal cruising. The deck includes ample storage in sail lockers and lazarettes.
Deck hatches and opening portlights provide robust ventilation and light below. Teak decking on the coachroof and cockpit sole and side decks adds sure footing. The anchoring system includes a powerful windlass, oversized anchor, and large bow roller assembly with chain locker access via a forward deck hatch.
The Oyster 485’s center cockpit is deep, secure, and exceptionally well protected—ideal for passagemaking in bluewater conditions. High coamings, wide seats, and a full cockpit enclosure (dodger and bimini) create a safe and comfortable command center for extended time at sea or socializing at anchor.
A single helm station with a large folding wheel provides excellent visibility forward over the raised saloon coachroof. The pedestal is equipped with sailing instruments, autopilot, and radar/chartplotter, with repeaters mounted under the dodger.
Cockpit dimensions are generous enough to accommodate guests for outdoor dining, with a folding teak table mounted on the pedestal as well as collapsable main helm steering wheel. Access to the wide stern platform and swim ladder makes boarding from a dinghy or swimming off the boat simple and safe. The dingy is stowed safely out of the way on Kato folding davits.
