Experienced sailors understand that good sailing performance directly enhances safety — the ability to sail off a lee shore, reach a safe harbor dead upwind or complete a passage within a favorable weather window. These are critical safety factors that should never be overlooked when choosing an offshore passagemaker. JOURNEY HOME meets each of these demands while also providing the comfort essential to making offshore passages and to relaxing in distant anchorages.
Designed by renowned naval architect Carl Schumacher and built to the highest standards of construction, JOURNEY HOME is capable of carrying you comfortably across any ocean. Her solid fiberglass hull provides the displacement needed for a smooth, forgiving motion, while her design elements — a long waterline, moderate beam, high righting moment, balanced weight distribution, and efficient foils ensure excellent performance. Below deck, her elegant, handcrafted interior and semi-raised salon fill the cabin with natural light and offer comfortable accommodations and exceptional load-carrying capacity, whether you’re setting out for an evening sail or a long ocean passage.
JOURNEY HOME is in exceptional condition and shows as a much newer boat in terms of both her systems and cosmetics. The feeling upon a walk through is “fresh”. Her gelcoat is shiny, canvas is clean and running rigging updated. Below decks, her upholstery appears as new and lockers and storage spaces are clean and tidy. Much care has been lavished upon her by her present owners who have touched nearly every system aboard over the past five years. She is well prepared for cruising the Pacific Northwest or beyond.

Interior Accommodations
JOURNEY HOME’s interior is finished in African Cherry with a teak and holly sole and Corian countertops. Her two-cabin layout with spacious Pullman berth forward and quarter cabin aft plus settee can sleep six comfortably. All hatches are locking, and drawers and louvered cabinet doors have positive latches to keep gear in place. Large salon windows fill the living area with natural light. She is also well lit throughout – with extra lighting added in key spaces. Opening ports (with screens) and hatches provide excellent ventilation. There are stainless steel security grates for the hatches and companionway.
Forward Cabin: The owner’s stateroom aboard JOURNEY HOME features a spacious Pullman berth to port. Storage is plentiful with drawers below the berth, a sliding door locker above, and dual hanging lockers to starboard separated by a bank of drawers. Natural light and ventilation come from opening ports and an overhead hatch, making this a comfortable and private retreat while at anchor or underway. Extra reading lights have been added, and lockers are lit.
Forward Head: Just forward of the Pullman berth, the forward head is designed for comfort and practicality at sea. It includes a separate shower stall, a Corian countertop vanity, electric marine toilet, and multiple lockers for toiletries and linens. The space is warmed by a heated towel rack via the diesel fired hydronic heater.
Salon: JOURNEY HOME’s salon is open, bright, and inviting, with large fixed windows that flood the interior with natural light. The U-shaped settee to port surrounds a fixed dining table. A straight settee to starboard doubles as a comfortable sea berth. Abundant lockers and shelves are well configured for long term living aboard. The salon’s generous beam and warm finish create a relaxing social space for dining and entertaining.

Galley: The U-shaped galley to port at the base of the companionway is secure and efficient under sail. Corian countertops provide ample workspace around the double stainless steel sinks, three-burner Force 10 propane stove with oven, and top loading refrigerator/freezer. Multiple drawers, lockers, and deep bins keep provisions organized and secure. The location ensures good ventilation from the companionway and excellent communication with the cockpit—ideal for offshore or liveaboard use.

Navigation Station: Aft to port, the navigation station offers a proper forward-facing chart table with dedicated seating and a large workspace. The beautifully designed custom Blue Sea Systems electrical panel and navigation electronics are within easy reach. There is room for paper charts, navigation tools, and ship’s manuals, making this an ideal command center whether on coastal passage or ocean crossing.
Aft Cabin: The aft cabin to starboard provides a double berth with lockers and shelving for personal storage. The hanging locker features an automatic light and there are reading lamps at the head of the berth. Three opening portlights and a deck hatch offer both light and ventilation. It is an inviting guest space in port and a secure off-watch berth underway. The warm wood joinery and quality finishes maintain the consistent feel of craftsmanship found throughout JOURNEY HOME.
Aft Head: The aft head is located at the base of the companionway to starboard, easily accessible from the cockpit. The space is finished in molded fiberglass surfaces for easy cleaning and durability, accented with African Cherry trim to match the yacht’s interior joinery. The head features a Corian countertop with stainless steel sink, electric marine toilet, and locker storage for toiletries and supplies. A handheld shower allows this space to be used as a shower if needed.
Shop/Garage: One of the Outbound 44’s hallmarks is exceptional systems access, and JOURNEY HOME exemplifies this. Aft of the nav station is the shop with custom work bench and tool and spare parts solutions, plus access to major systems like the watermaker, hydronic heating system, water heater and fresh water pump, autopilot and steering gear and fuel filters. A hatch opens into the cockpit, providing headroom and good ventilation. The space is well lit with white and red LED lights.

Deck and Hull
The hull of the Outbound 44 is designed and engineered for serious offshore cruising. The hull is constructed of solid hand laid fiberglass laminate with a massive system of stringers, longitudinals and bulkheads that are carefully bonded directly to the hull while it is still in the mold. Laminates are increased in high stress areas and in the bow and bilge for added strength. Vinylester resin is used in the outer layers of the hull lamination. To eliminate keel bolts and for maximum strength, the keel is integral to the hull. The rudder is a carbon fiber spade with PYI/Jefa bearings and is supported in a strong tube. After the deck is through-bolted and sealed to the hull with 3M 5200 polyurethane sealant, the bulkheads are fiberglassed on their entire perimeter. All furniture is then carefully bonded to the hull, adding to the structural support system. The deck is cored with balsa and where hardware penetrates, the core materials are replaced with solid fiberglass. There are removable overhead panels at all deck hardware locations. The pushpit and pulpit are 1-1/2″ diameter stainless steel connected by double lifelines with gates port and starboard. Solid handrails extend from the pushpit to the midships gates to assist cockpit exit and entry. There are stainless steel grab rails along the coach top, a custom stainless steel double anchor roller, and six stainless steel 12″ mooring cleats.
The cockpit is a safe and comfortable place whether driving the boat in a gale or resting in a quiet anchorage. The long seats provide plenty of room for entertaining, sleeping outside while your partner is on watch or sunbathing. Most importantly, the cockpit is deep and narrow with seat backs ergonomically designed for maximum comfort. A walk-through transom with boarding platform and fold down swim ladder makes accessing the dinghy or returning to the boat after swim easy. There is a hot/cold shower faucet at the transom.
Excellent stowage and load carrying capacity are designed into all aspects of the Outbound’s hull and deck. Large water and fuel tanks are below the salon cabin sole and over the keel which adds to the boats upwind performance and opens up space under the settees and bunks for stowage. There is a large foredeck locker located forward of the watertight bulkhead that easily accommodates sails, dock steps, fenders anchors, or any cruising gear you want to keep out of the living spaces. The locker also offers access to the chain locker and makes setting and stowing the asymmetrical spinnaker a breeze. The bow thruster and its battery bank are also located in this locker. In addition to the forward locker there is a giant cockpit lazarette, a large propane locker and room for the life raft under the helm seat for easy deployment.
