Malö Yachts are one of Scandinavia’s oldest and most experienced yacht builders. Between 1994-2004, 87 Malö 39’s were produced, all with customizable interior layout suggestions from the design team. The quality artistry that comes from a small, dedicated team was made possible by these craftsmen and sailors. The Malö 39 sails well; gunkholing in the San Juan Islands or crossing oceans. Kalysta is equipped with an in-boom furling system, accommodating swim step platform, easy chairs in the salon, and a double stateroom layout.

Kalysta has been well-maintained by her owners. She has cruised Pacific Northwest waters for almost her entire existence, getting shipped here in the spring of 2001. Her topsides and teak decks have benefited from a full canvas boat cover every winter.  View Kalysta at our Lake Union office and see for yourself why these Scandinavian yachts are such respected cruising boats.

Kalysta’s interior is finished in satin-varnished, hand selected, Mahogany. Her cabinetry is simple and elegant, showcasing the wood itself. She has varnished Teak and Koto inlayed cabin soles that have been carpeted over the years to prevent wear. The overhead is a soft white finish and easy to clean, secured by teak battens. She is well lit with many LED overhead and reading lights throughout the boat.

Beginning forward, there is a large owner’s cabin with V-berth.  A large overhead hatch provides generous natural light to this typically dark space and also serves as an emergency escape hatch with fold down ladder.   The berth is comfortable for a couple and has ample storage with two large cabinets. The port side has a hanging locker and the starboard side has shelves with an upholstered dressing seat below. Above the bed and along the outboard sides of the hull are four cabinets and two open shelves for stowage.  Below the bunk are two large drawers.

Ensuite to the forward cabin is a dedicated shower stall and sink. Finished in bright white gel-coat the space is easy to clean. While this may seem impractical to some, having a dedicated shower space is often overlooked and doesn’t leave the working head soggy for the next crewmember.

The main salon, centered in between the statreooms, has a functional arrangement for two couples and dinner guests. The U-shaped settee on the port side surrounds the dinette table and provides an extra berth for one crewmember or child. The starboard side has two custom easy chairs separated by a deep liquor cabinet. Above that are two more bar storage cabinets with dedicated space for the full set of Malö drink ware. This space is well suited for entertaining and has lots of natural light from the four opening portlights, overhead Lewmar deck hatch and 6’ 3” of headroom.

The nav station is on the starboard side just aft of the salon. There is ample storage under the seat, in the flip top chart table, by the three drawers on the inboard side and the open storage immediately outboard. The AC & DC breaker panels are well labeled and all information needed by the navigator is in one area.

Opposite the nav station, on the port side, is the L-shaped galley. Conveniently located at the base of the companionway, large fiddles surround the countertop keeping items safe in a seaway. The durable Corian countertops are easy to clean and provide a good worksurface. The double basin sink is just inboard of centerline and has a single lever faucet. Outboard, in the corner, is the top-loading refrigerator with small freezer bin inside. The 2-burner stove and oven is just aft with sliders and cabinets above for dishware and customizable peg hole storage racks. Three drawers aft of the stove hold cutlery and other cooking utensils.

Aft of the galley, is a guest cabin featuring a double berth, ample storage and a dressing bench. The port cockpit seat opens up into this berth for emergency egress and ventilation.  Under the berth, and inboard is exceptional access to the prop shaft, transmission, and water heater.

To starboard and aft of the companionway is the head. The molded countertop, sink and cabinetry are functional and wipe down easily. There is a manual flush toilet facing forward at the aft bulkhead and good ventilation is provided via an opening port light above the sink.

Deck and Hull

Kalysta is finished with fresh white NGA gel coat covering the GRP sandwich construction hull layup with balsa core. Blue stripes are embedded in the gel coat for the boot and cove stripes. Below the cove stripe is a molded in rubbing strake with aluminum capping for protection against scratches.  A gold Malö emblem is affixed to the bow. The durable construction continues with all bulkheads, ribs and stringers, laminated directly into the hull. The rudder is solid fiberglass with a 60 mm stainless rudder shaft. The keel has integrated lead ballast. Kalysta was last hauled in 2019 and coated with Petit Trinidad Pro Blue bottom paint and regularly has her zincs checked by a diver.

The deck and coach roof are also of sandwich construction and bolted and laminated to increase strength. The decking is 12 mm solid, hand selected, end grain teak. Four scuppers actively drain the deck; preventing any standing water on the teak. Forward is a recessed anchor locker containing the windlass and ground tackle. The anchor cleverly nestles into the stem with an additional roller above to tack a down wind sail or secure a mooring line. Double stainless lifelines and stanchions travel all the way aft to the pushpit with boarding gates just outboard of the cockpit on the port and starboard side.

The solid fiberglass Targa arch supports the mainsheet and keeps the cockpit free of the traveler. The fixed windscreen with hardened safety glass and aluminum frame provides a cozy cockpit and can be fully enclosed with the canvas. The deep, teak-lined cockpit provides a safe and classy feel while underway for ocean passages or socializing at anchor with friends. Recessed LED lighting in the arch enhances the ambiance. Two deck lockers, one on the starboard side and one under the helm seat provide massive stowage for dock lines, fenders, cleaning supplies and more. The swim platform allows for easy dinghy boarding and swimming at your destination.
