Like a fine wine, Morning Star is improving with age. There are few cruising yachts that stand the test of time better and even fewer who have seen a legacy of such care and continuous improvement. When launched, she was a lean and mean racing machine; one of the hottest boats on the block. This, however was at the time when a racing yacht was expected to be well mannered, well-constructed and ready to tackle whatever the sea has in store. These qualities make her an excellent cruising platform, particularly with the addition of electric main halyard winch, reconfigured sail handling systems and all the comforts of a modern cruising yacht. Down below she exhibits the essentials of a traditional, proper yacht: excellent sea berths, a galley that functions in boisterous conditions, good ventilation, plenty of handholds and beautiful joinery showcasing the hand of skilled craftsmen. This custom design by C&C is a joy to sail with the systems that allow shorthanded crew or a sailing couple to feel the breeze and ask for more.

Morning Star has undergone three major refits. In 1996 she went to the renowned Bruckman Yard where interior improvements were made to the yard’s exacting standards. She was also rewired at that time. In 2010-2011 a second refit was completed, including new hull paint, new standing rigging and a complete refinish of her interior. More recently, in 2017 she received a new Yanmar diesel and a complete revamp of her engine room space, her bridgedeck was cut away to allow better access from the cockpit to the interior, new refrigeration systems, canvas, electronics, solar panels and plumbing. The following lists includes some of the major work completed during her most recent refits:

Accommodations
The interior accommodations aboard Morning Star will meet the needs of the modern sailor as well as the exacting standards of the discriminating yachtsman. The open plan, carefully varnished teak surfaces and newly upholstered settees are warm and inviting. The varnished cabin sole and teak ceilings are nicely offset by the new white tongue and groove cabin top. The main salon table is the focal point of the interior with plenty of room for friends, family and crew. Sleeping quarters make sense with two quarter berths, one pilot berth and a forward cabin with two berths. Storage is plentiful in drawers, lockers with teak basket weave door fronts and under berths and settees. Ventilation is excellent with five opening hatches, two dorade vents and two mushroom vents with ten fixed ports adding additional light to the interior. Alpineglow LED overhead and reading lights and LED foot lights provide good illumination. When the seas kick up, there are plenty of handholds to keep crew in place as they navigate the interior.

Starting forward is the master stateroom with cozy double berth to port and single berth to starboard. Access to the foc’s’le which houses the separate windlass battery, anchor rode and chain, and line locker is through the bulkhead at the head of the berths. There is storage under the berths as well as in 12 drawers under the port berth. Three cubbies to port and starboard are above and outboard the berths. Aft of the starboard berth is a bureau with locker above and one drawer and shelved locker below. A large hanging locker with three cubbies outboard is immediately aft. Ventilation is provided from two Hella fans and a large opening hatch with two fixed ports in the coach top sides. Two Alpine LED reading lights and an overhead LED light add to the natural light.

The head is aft of the port berth across from the hanging locker and is fitted with electric head, sink with hot and cold pressure water and shower wand. Storage is available under the sink cabinet, and outboard the head and counter. A mirror is on the forward bulkhead and teak towel racks on the bulkhead. A varnished teak grate covers the shower pan. Ventilation from the mushroom vent and opening port is good.

The main salon is immediately aft of the forward cabin. The space can clearly hold a crowd but at the same time has great spots for reading the local cruising guide or taking a nap. All upholstery was redone with a warm yellow ultrasuede fabric with all foam replaced at the same time. The large C-shaped settee to port surrounds a beautiful inlaid teak table with varnished shelf outboard. The liquor cabinet is one of several lockers accessed through the shelf, narrow lockers are outboard and additional storage and water tankage is below the settee seat. To starboard is a straight settee with pilot berth above and outboard and storage lockers behind the seat back and below the seat cushion. The Dickinson propane heater mounted on the forward bulkhead provides both ambience and warmth. Immediately aft of the straight settee is the large wet locker with a huge upholstered seat for use when pulling on the foul weather boots or curling up with that good book.

Next aft is the forward-facing navigation station. The large top opening chart table has a compass flush mounted into the table top and plenty of room for charts. Instruments are mounted on the forward dash along with the DC electronics panel. A large storage cubbie is forward of the upholstered seat under the chart table and two drawers and cubbie face inboard. Outboard the chart table is additional storage along with the Skydock for the IPOD, book shelf and small inverter. The Chelsea clock and barometer are mounted above the instrument dash. There is a large locker under the seat. The Aquasignal LED chart light and overhead DR. LED light are both red/white lights.

Across from the Nav station and is the U-shaped galley, perfect for the cook in a seaway but with plenty of room for help from the crew along the periphery. The large double sink is inboard with refrigeration/freezer compartments forward. The three burner Force Ten stove/oven is outboard and ample space for stores is located along the entire outboard portion of the galley as well as below the counters. Aft of the stove is additional counter space with storage above and outboard.

Two quarter berths are located to port and starboard, nicely positioned for the off watch crew and/or great quarters for the kids or guests. Each berth has a small counter inboard with locker below, alpenglow LED reading light, and Hella fan. The locker above the counter to starboard houses the new battery bank with Magnum inverter below. The electrical panel is above the port side counter. Stainless steel fuel tanks are under the berths. The companionway is between the two quarter berths with the engine located behind the companionway stairs.

Sails and Rigging
The tapered aluminum spar of Morning Star was stripped to bare aluminum and primed, faired and repainted during the 2010-11 retrofit. The rod rigging and all terminals were inspected at that time as well. There are 16 Barient winches and one Harken electric main halyard winch. The sails are built by North. The inventory is extensive and most sails are in good shape although several still have #8 luff tape which will need to be replaced with #6 tape to fit the Harken headfoil. All chain plates have been inspected and all chain plate bolts replaced (2010).

Deck and Hull
Morning Star was built by the custom division of C&C Yachts. Her hull is balsa core fiberglass sandwich construction consisting of fiberglass mat and roving, fabmat (a combination mat and roving) and end grain balsa core material. The gelcoat layer is brushed on and finished with Awlgrip Matterhorn White paint. Hull, cabin top and nonskid were repainted in 2010. The hull is exceptionally strong with the centerline portion of the hull built up with unidirectional roving and floors and stringers constructed of unidirectional roving and fabmat around a low density core. The deck is constructed in a similar fashion and it bonded to the hull and mechanically fastened with stainless steel bolts. All bulkheads and major furniture (such as berth platforms) are bonded to the hull ensuring that hull, deck and interior structure work together to deliver an exceptionally strong vessel. The keel is bolted to the hull with stainless steel bolts and the rudder is a cantilevered balanced spade rudder of molded fiberglass and cored end grain balsa.

The cockpit is a fabulous place to enjoy the sail or entertain once the anchor is down. Beautifully varnished teak combings, teak seats, varnished teak grate over the cockpit sole, and a substantial removable teak cockpit table are a few of the amenities. The cockpit is protected by a new Breezy dodger and a nice awning provides additional protection from sun and rain. There are lazarettes under each of the cockpit seats. The side decks are easy to navigate with a foredeck that provides a good platform for sail changes or sunbathing.
