SEA FIRE is a professionally built, semi-custom cruising yacht of uncompromising quality. She has enjoyed excellent care under three owners. Most recently she’s been updated with new electronics, sails, hull and deck paint, and DC power equipment. Her condition is impressive. A well-designed steel sailboat offers the ultimate margin of safety for offshore world cruising. Impact resistance and structural integrity are absolute. Professionally designed and custom built by Waterline Yachts of Sidney, British Columbia, you won’t find a better equipped or better conceived offshore yacht.
SEA FIRE is turnkey and ready to set sail for blue waters. After owning and cruising a custom 51-foot steel sailboat and selling another dozen during the last 25 years, I can say with confidence that none are better than the Waterlines build by Ed Rutherford and his crew in the early 2000s.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
SEA FIRE has a well-conceived layout for both offshore cruising and extended time living aboard while in port. The center of the interior is the raised salon with 270 degree views through the wrap around, curved/tinted safety glass window. Access to the accommodation is easy from the cockpit over the short companion way threshold and down the companionway steps. This stair is bounded to port and starboard by a fore and aft bulkheads. There are four steps with the lowest step removable along with the floorboard for access to the genset. Two flashlights are stored under steps as well as a storage nook for winch handles. Below, one finds shelter and elegance while enjoying views through the abundant ports, windows, and hatches.
Starting forward is the master/forward stateroom just aft of a watertight bulkhead. Continuing aft is the salon. A dinette and L-shaped settee are to port with a straight settee to starboard. Heading aft and up two steps is the raised portion of the cabin. The navigation center to starboard. Just aft of the nav station is a large/deep heated hanging locker. To port is the large, wrap-around galley. Aft of the galley and to port of the companionway is the head and work room. To starboard and aft of the companionway is the aft stateroom.
The interior joinery is teak, with solid teak used extensively including corner posts, cabinet faces, door and window frames, door fronts and louvered cabinet doors. Bulkheads are high quality teak veneers over marine plywood. The teak is varnished with Z-spar gloss varnish build coats with two top coats of Epiphanes satin varnish. The cabin sole is satin varnish. Trim accents including hatch and port rings, counter fiddles, and window trim are satin finished. The cabin sole is solid teak and basswood over marine plywood. Numerous access hatches are fitted in the cabin sole and are hinged and locked closed. The workshop sole is finished with rubber Lonseal non-skid. The overhead is gloss white painted tongue and groove panels; removable for accessing wiring and deck hardware. The galley and head counters are solid surface with built in fiddles. Abundant LED overhead, reading, and task lights are fitted. Overhead lights in the salon and navigation station are equipped with dimmers. All hanging/large lockers have automatic lights.
The forward/master stateroom is entered through a door forward of the salon. Headroom in this cabin measures 6’ 2”. The centerline berth has a custom Tempur Pedic mattress and fitted comforter. The bunk measures 6’ 6” long by 5’ wide. Beneath the mattress and vented slat boards is a very large storage bin and four drawers. A cabinet, hanging locker and bookshelf are to port and starboard. Forward and above the bunk is a bookshelf. Two sets of reading lights are fitted at the forward end of this bunk. Red LED courtesy lights illuminate the cabin sole. Overhead light switch is located near the cabin entrance. Two hull side fixed ports and an opening overhead hatch provide natural light. A three-quarter length, teak framed mirror is fitted onto the aft bulkhead.
The main salon is centered, low, and welcoming. This full beam/open space is illuminated with fixed hull ports and overhead hatches. Overhead lights are controlled with dimmers. Four reading lights are fitted at the forward and aft ends of the settees. Red LED courtesy lights illuminate the cabin sole at night. The upholstery is luxurious black leather. There is abundant storage behind and under the settees. The gloss-varnished table has teak radiating veneers and is fixed to the compression post. On the table’s starboard side is a fold out drop leaf which adds table seating via the starboard settee. Utilizing this leaf, the table easily seats 7. Outboard and above the dinette and settee are three louvered cabinets(6 cabinets in all), bookshelf and open shelves. Four fixed hull port lights (2 to port 2 to starboard) flank bookshelves. The stereo is located aft of the starboard settee. A flat screen TV/monitor is mounted on the forward bulkhead port side. The sound system is truly high fidelity with subwoofer, midrange and upper range speakers. There are three amplifiers in all. Headroom in the salon is 6’ 3”.
Aft of the starboard settee and up two steps is the forward-facing navigation station. The black leather upholstered seat is high enough to allow outside visibility. A top-opening chart table is deep and inlaid with a tasteful sail boat. Fiddles are fitted to the side but not aft. A dimmable overhead light centered on the chart table and a flex-arm light provide nighttime illumination. An instrument console houses the radar/chartplotter, multi display, autopilot control, single side band radio and vhf. Outboard to starboard are the breaker panels. The navigator’s seat lifts up to access storage below. Outboard of the seat is a storage bin. Under and outboard is more storage housing the SSB Radio and Pactor modem. Additional storage cabinets are located outboard and beneath the chart table with access to the solar panel voltage regulator and battery main switches.
To port across from the navigations station and aft of the dinette is the large galley. This space is a gourmet cook’s dream! Toe kicks and a counter height make working in this area extremely ergonomic. At the forward end, a long counter divides the galley from the dinette while still allowing the cook to socialize. Lights mounted outboard illuminate the counter. An overhead hatch ventilates the galley. Starting aft and inboard and working around the galley in a clockwise direction is a deep double stainless-steel sink. Located on the vessel’s centerline and high, this sink will drain overboard at any angle of heel. A single lever faucet with pull out sprayer nozzle, soap dispenser pump and manual freshwater foot pump are mounted at the sink. Under the sink is storage and access to the overboard/grey water & Y-valve. Forward, beneath the counter on the outside of the galley is a large cabinet. At the bottom of the “U”, aft are the large top-loading refrigerator and freezer. Both fridge and freezer have shelves dividing the upper and lower halves. A custom spice rack is mounted just above the fridge and freezer. Above the spice rack are dual cabinets with tasteful sailboat inlays. Wine glass storage is built into this space. Outboard are cabinets with sliding doors. Below is a set of three drawers with a very large storage cabinet below. A gimbaled Force Ten stove/oven is gimbal-mounted in a stainless steel lined alcove. Pot/pan storage is provided in a cabinet beneath the oven. The forward counter has three cabinets, best utilized as pantry space.
To port of the companionway is the head and separate shower stall. The head and shower are finished in white laminate with gloss varnished teak trim and solid Corian. The Techma electric head is located aft and forward facing. Above and behind the toilet is a cabinet with access to the Y-valve. A teak-trimmed mirror is mounted on the forward bulkhead above the sink. This oval sink is mounted below a Corian counter. Curved cabinets doors open to storage under the sink. Sliding door cabinets are located outboard of the sink. An overhead red LED light and two “task” lights located under the cabinet light this space at night while a large cabin window, opening port light and hull side fixed port provide natural light and ventilation. Two floorboards provide storage and access to black water and grey water overboard through hulls. The separate shower stall is inboard and against the aft bulkhead. The shower floor serves as a sump and is deep with an electric overboard discharge pump. Access to the workshop is through the shower.
Aft and to starboard of the companionway is the aft stateroom. The finish in this cabin is well-balanced between solid teak and white laminate. There is a large, fixed cabin side window, one opening cabin side port, two opening ports into the cockpit and two hull side fixed ports. With many ports and windows there is plenty of airflow and natural light in this cabin. Ample space and headroom are found all the way forward in this cabin for stand-up dressing. The bed measures 6’ 5” long by 5’ wide at the forward end. There are two drawers forward and under this bunk along with bin storage beneath the mattress and wood slat boards. Lighting is via overhead spot lights and two reading lights. A cabinet with five drawers, a hanging locker, and two shelves provides ample storage. Two hinged floorboards with gas springs access storage space and the genset.
The workshop/mechanical room is located aft of the shower on the port side and is accessed through a door in the shower. This space is finished in white laminate and teak trim and has a rubber tile sole. Overhead dome lights, two hull side fixed ports, and two opening ports into the cockpit provide light and ventilation. A workbench runs along the hull side outboard. A 110V outlet strip is located at the forward end. Storage shelves inboard hold spares and cleaning supplies. Large tools are secured with Velcro straps on the outboard hull side. Access to the steering system, heater, refrigeration systems, watermaker, dive compressor, Simrad autopilot computer, and pumps are in this space.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS:
The hull and deck are constructed of mild steel (minimum 44,000 psi yield) with a plating thickness of 1” on the keel bottom, ¼” on the keel sides, 3/16” on the hull skin, 11 gauge on the house, deck, cockpit, and transom and 10 gauge on the skeg and rudder. The angle iron framing system runs both transversely and longitudinally. All seams are welded inside and out. 316 Stainless steel attachment points are provided on deck for stanchions, windlass, toe rails, chainplates, and companionway hatch. The toe rail is a highly polished 316 stainless steel 1 1/2″ by 3″ rectangular section tube and is mounted on welded tabs set just high enough to free deck water quickly. The toe rail is strong enough for preventers, spinnaker blocks, fenders, and lashings to be tied off anywhere along the boat’s sides. Integral in the keel structure is a baffled fuel tank. Below the fuel tank is a sealed, lead-filled ballast compartment in a bulb appendage. A separate propane locker is integral with the transom. A forward sail locker with deck access provides a watertight collision bulkhead. A self-draining anchor tray is built in. The bowsprit/anchor roller is steel fabrication and welded into the hull. The wraparound salon windows and hull side fixed ports are laminated and heat strengthened reflective coated glass using chemical vapor deposition.
The original coating system began with the entire hull being sandblasted inside and out, followed by molten zinc flame-sprayed on the hull above the waterline and on the deck. The entire hull and deck exterior were then coated with successive layers of epoxy (Devoe 235) to a 20 mil thickness. Awlgrip sandable fairing paints were then applied and sanded smooth. The finish coat on the hull and deck is Awlgrip polyurethane black with a contrasting boot top and cove stripe in green. The deck and hull were repainted in 2023.
The sandblasted hull interior was sprayed with two coats of zinc-rich epoxy and hand brushed behind all framing. Extra coats of epoxy were applied in the bilge areas. The hull is insulated with polyurethane spray foam to a thickness of 1-1/2” to 3”. Over the foam, the hull sides are lined with white painted mahogany plywood. The deck is finished with Awlgrip Griptex non-skid surface. The cockpit seats, floor and coaming tops as well as the transom steps are overlaid with teak and rubber. The shaped, curved salon wrap around window is made of laminated and heat strengthened reflective coated glass as are the fixed hull side ports.
HULL & DECK:
SEA FIRE has an Awl-grip linear polyurethane black hull with green boot stripes and a wide cove stripe in line with the hull side fixed ports. Her bottom was last painted in May of 2025 with two coats of Devoe ABC #3 black antifouling paint. Her deck is painted with offwhite Awl-grip griptex non-skid. Teak and rubber are overlayed in the cockpit, cockpit coamings, and stern platform. This teak is glued down. A welded steel anchor platform/bowsprit extends over the slightly-raked bow and has articulating stainless steel rollers for the self-launching dual anchors. The double bow pulpit extends all the way forward, around the anchor platform. The anchor platform top is flat and wide enough for safe footing. The bow/stern pulpits and stanchions are all constructed of 1 1/4” stainless tube. Stanchion height is 2’ 6” and the stern pulpit wraps around to the front of the cockpit for safety. Forward of the raised salon cabin top, the deck is nearly flush, except for the raised hatch foundations, and well cambered for strength and water shedding. The aft cockpit is large, deep and “T” shaped. The steering wheel is removable and is lashed to the stainless rail while at anchor to provide an immense open cockpit space for lounging and dining. The “walk-over transom” features a very wide and easily accessed swim platform. The next step up to the transom is generous and provides a comfortable place to sit and works well for scuba or swimming off the transom. The swim step is fitted with a fold down stainless swim ladder and hot and cold shower. An integral storage locker with fiberglass top is located on the stern and also houses the propane tanks. This is a great area for storing dinghy gas and/or snorkel gear.
On-deck storage is in a very large bow locker which also provides a watertight bulkhead forward, and in two large quarter lockers. A Lewmar 24” by 24” deck hatch accesses the bow locker and is fitted with a Lewmar vent. All the way forward is the fiberglass-lined anchor chain bin with false floor and overboard drain. Lines can be hung in this locker. The anchor windlass handheld controls and washdown hose are also located in this space. There is a redundant windlass control on a 50’ tether so the windlass can be operated from the helm when shorthanded. The quarter lockers are accessed through Lewmar 18” by 18” deck hatches aft of the cockpit. This storage space is full beam, deep, and fitted with overhead dome light and scuba tank storage holders.
The cockpit is large, deep and “T-shaped” providing a sheltered location for sailing or lounging. A custom hard dodger, hard bimini and canvas connector protect the cockpit. The cockpit is deep with high coamings. The coamings are comfortable for sitting on or stepping on. The port and starboard settees are overlayed with teak and rubber that is glued down. The steering wheel is easy to walk around and recessed seats are outboard of the wheel and aft. One can also sit atop the surrounding coamings while steering. A low-maintenance fold-up/drop leaf, white plastic cockpit table stores on the forward side of the steering pedestal. Mounted on the stainless-steel arch are the solar panels, GPS antennas, Sat-phone antenna, cockpit speakers, and cockpit light. Mounted on the transom is Silent X wind generator on a stainless pole. The Mercury outboard stores on the transom and is hoisted by the adjacent stainless hoist.

SAILS & RIGGING:
SEA FIRE is a serious world cruiser with a powerful yet manageable rig to make offshore and coastal sailing possible for a couple or family. The mast is deck stepped and conservatively stable with three sets of slightly swept aft spreaders. Running backstays are fitted for use with the staysail. Control lines are led aft to the cockpit and large powered winches handle major loads. The Liesurefurl mainsail makes reefing and raising the mainsail a breeze and eliminates the hassles of a sail cover and lazy-jacks. The staysail is on a fixed furler. The genoa has a foam luff for flattening when reefing. Schaefer furlers, Harken deck hardware, Lewmar stoppers, Liesurefurl, and Anderson winches have all been selected as “best available” and show minimal wear.
