As part of a bigger dream to sail around the world, I began sailing in college, and within a year I was teaching sailing and racing. Looking towards graduation, I began putting together the skills and training that would make me a valuable crew member. I completed my EMT, Wilderness EMT, and Divemaster certifications, and the winter after graduation I moved to the Caribbean, working on various boats in different capacities before landing a full-time position as mate on a custom 60-foot aluminum cutter sloop. Based in St. Lucia, we traveled throughout the Caribbean; south to about 70 miles off the coast of Venezuela and north to St. Thomas before making the crossing to Virginia Beach, up the ICW and returning the boat to Philadelphia at the close of the season.
I spent that summer in Rhode Island working as mate on a 1929 77-foot Classic Commuter that was being restored in Newport by Ted Turner. In the fall, I moved to Australia and traveled to New Zealand where I sailed and explored Marlborough Sounds. I returned to San Diego and began teaching sailing at J/World. Eventually, I was hired off a race boat by a real estate developer and began a 25-year career in commercial and corporate real estate asset management.
Through the years I have continued to sail and race; competing in various boats including J/105, Flying Tiger, IMX-38, Cal 40, J/80, J/120, J/24, Catalina 27, Capri 14, Snipe, Thistle, CFJ, Custom 50. The focus of my racing however, has been as part of a Soling one-design campaign competing in local regattas as well as Olympic Class Regattas, U.S., Continental, and World Championships, with multiple podium finishes in the Pacific Coast Championships, U.S. Championships, and North American Championships.
In 2023 I left my corporate job and started Puloca Yacht Company, with a vision of bringing the discipline of corporate asset management to the management of yachts. This work encompasses the full lifecycle of yacht ownership from acquisition, through training, refit/restoration, management, and ultimately disposition. In addition to an important alignment of values and commitment to our clients, my work at Swiftsure Yachts dovetails neatly with the yacht management service platform and allows my clients broad access to markets, market intelligence, and experience that allows us to help maximize the value of their investment.
