Octopus Time is a well-maintained and nicely upgraded example of the Catalina Morgan 440 DS. Her spacious and well-designed interior provides ample living space, with excellent visibility and natural light from large windows in her raised salon and galley. This layout accommodates two couples comfortably in two staterooms with separate heads. On deck, she is thoughtfully organized for ease of use, with a large cockpit that facilitates both relaxation and efficient sail handling. All control lines lead aft to a two-speed electric winch in the cockpit. A walk-through transom leads to the wide swim step with good access to the dinghy or swim ladder. Tall lifelines surround wide side decks that are easily navigated – and protected by over height lifelines. Her deep fin keel and a powerful rig offer good sailing performance. Interior Accommodations
Three easy steps lead from the cockpit to Octopus Time’s raised salon. Salon and galley are on the same level, allowing excellent views to the outside and lots of natural light. There are overhead hatches and shades for portlights. Headroom throughout her interior is excellent – 6’5” in the salon.
The aft stateroom is adjacent to the companionway to port. This cabin is a well proportioned cabin for a boat of this size, with offset queen berth. There is a small dressing settee to port. Outboard, there is a large bank of storage with a hanging locker, locker with shelves and two cabinets. A built in shelf is aft at the head of the berth. There is good light and ventilation from opening ports, a hatch that opens to the cockpit and a deck prism. Storage compartments are also located in the sole.
The aft head may be accessed either from the aft stateroom or the main cabin. White molded surfaces finish this space. The head is electric flush. A counter runs along the outboard side with the oval stainless sink at the forward end. There is a mirrored cabinet above and locker below the sink. The shower is integral to the space with a curtain on a track.
The U-shaped galley features ample counter space. Outboard, the Princess propane 3 burner stove/oven has a cover that creates additional working area. There is top loading storage space forward of the stove, with two bin stainless sink inboard. There is a locker and front loading refrigerator below the forward end of the counter and drawers and top loading freezer below the aft counter. A trash bin and two lockers are below the companionway stairs. Additional storage is at eye level in cabinets fore and aft.
The salon features a raised dinette to starboard surrounding a high-low origami table that folds in for cocktails or out for a meal with guests. Opposite to port is a linear settee/sofa that reclines at either end. At the aft end of this settee is the outboard facing navigation station. The electrical panel and radios are nearby. A teak handrail is mounted on the overhead, providing a stable handhold when transiting fore and aft. There is a locker to port at the forward end of this space.
The master stateroom is forward, with walk around “island” berth on centerline. Forward of this berth is a watertight bulkhead separating the anchor locker. Shelves run along the hull sides and there are six drawers beneath the foot of the berth. Aft and to port is a settee with small table and mirror. There are four LED reading lights. The ensuite head with shower is aft and starboard. This cabin is finished in molded white surfaces for easy maintenance. The Raritan electric flush toilet faces inboard at the forward end of the space. There is a locker above. The sink with single lever faucet is located aft, with mirrored cabinet above and locker below. The shower stall with accordion door is aft and outboard, with a molded in seat. Three opening portlights in the stateroom and one in the head, plus a large hatch provides light and ventilation.

Manufacturer’s Notes
Catalina presents the first cruising boat to bear the Catalina Morgan name. Representing the best elements of both marks, the 440 combines the rugged offshore features of Morgan with the comfort, ergonomics and style of a Catalina. The joy of cruising is visiting beautiful destinations. In order to fully enjoy the view in the 440, the main cabin sole is raised to provide great visibility from the large, wide, cabin windows. All cruisers want speed under sail, easy motion and sure, predictable handling characteristics. The hull form of the 440 is conservative and seakindly and designed not to pound when going to weather or powering into seas. Offering the stability of a very low center of gravity, the 440 hull is stiff and comfortable. Representing the ideal cruising shape, the stem is raked to prevent damage when deploying or retrieving the anchor. The additional flare and buoyancy forward means dryer decks. A minimum wetted surface canoe body that does not become radically asymmetrical when heeled, means a light, predictable helm. The rudder is protected by a molded-in skeg and is supported by a massive lower rudder bearing. The upper bearing is stainless steel and bronze, while the rudder post itself is solid stainless. This is a very rugged rudder system designed for offshore blue water durability. An aluminum weldment supports the upper rudder bearing and quadrant, as well as supporting the autopilot drive motor. This arrangement reduces autopilot drive motor noise resonance for quiet operation, and provides great strength to the steering system. A high strength, structural foam and aluminum grid system attaches the fiberglass hull to the one piece molded fiberglass liner and supports the engine and tanks, while structuring the mast step and keel attachment area. All transverse rigging loads are borne by the aluminum and fiberglass grid system and not by the hull. An important feature for offshore sailing is the watertight collision bulkhead. Heavily fiberglassed to the deck and hull, it is just aft or the divided anchor locker. A vertical 1200 lb windlass with a dedicated chain gypsy set on centerline is provided with both power up and power down switches. Anchor rode can be lead clockwise around the windlass for a starboard anchor rode, or counter clockwise around the windlass for the port anchor rode, providing fairleads to the windlass from either anchor roller. Locker hatches have a built in chafe guard to protect the hatch when windlass is in use. The massive stainless steel anchor roller weldment is designed for two independent anchor systems. Dependable auxiliary power comes with the 75 horsepower fresh water cooled turbo charged diesel engine. Located under the structural grid in the main cabin, the engine has easy access to service points and “daily checks”. Through hull valves are sensibly located in one central area of the bilge compartment.
The goal of a deck salon design should be to provide the ability to enjoy the view through the salon windows. The 440 has excellent visibility, whether seated at the dinette table or working in the galley, you can truly enjoy the surroundings. In the galley, you’ll find solid surface counter tops, both durable and beautiful. The 3 Burner stove and propane oven, has a solid top surface for easy maintenance. Within easy reach on the main countertop is a large deep polished stainless steel sink, with detachable sprayer faucet. The front opening refrigerator has a very high “R” efficiency factor. A separate, very versatile freezer/refrigerator compartment is located aft in the galley. Both compartments are stainless lined and are both AC and DC powered, automatically switching power sources when AC. power is connected. The salon table will accommodate 6 adults. Area underneath settees at the dinette is open for storage, ideal for canned goods. Table raises and lowers electrically with a switch control to form a double berth, the filler cushion matches the salon upholstery and is standard.
Built-in Catalina quality means thirty-one inch lifelines on removable tapered stanchions that make going forward safe and secure. Stern gates that retract into stern rails, and won’t rattle underway. A solid teak cap rail with chafe guards for dock lines. An extruded aluminum cap rail is also available. Sail handling is a cinch for skipper and crew with an electric 2 speed central winch standard, with line hangers for halyards that allow wet lines to dry. Single point traveler controls can be operated from the same central position. A space between the pedestal and table allows easier crew access to port and starboard winches. The sturdy four leg cockpit table is standard with large storage bin and guard at forward end of table. Secure foot braces are under the table port and starboard create a secure position on either tack. The Diamond Series Edson steering pedestal has single lever engine control and full engine instrumentation with alarms and electric engine shut off switch. Every 440 has a VHF with second station handset and speaker in cockpit. Raymarine speed and depth systems, wind with masthead transducer are all standard. Nine foot cockpit seats with deep backrests make this the most secure, comfortable cockpit in her class. On the transom is a unique lockable stern locker for storage or a 6 person life raft. The stern seats have waterproof speakers mounted underneath.
A soft headliner with teak trim, is easy to clean, controls sound, and looks great too. Composite textured cabin sole, is rugged, beautiful and requires no maintenance. Overhead is a console above navigation desk has space for repeater instruments and flat surfaces for tank monitors, with an area to suspend a plotter or radar for easy view of the navigator when standing or seated. CD changer / TV control / Stereo systems controls are located on a removable panel, this makes adding or servicing electronics easy. The navigation desk has a comfortable sliding chair with a swivel base. You’ll find a chart table is large enough to hold all standard chart books. Electric AC / DC panel has all breakers grouped by function: lights, pumps, auxiliary systems etc.
