ACCOMMODATIONS:
From the cockpit, passage below decks to the accommodation is easy thanks to the 8” high bridgedeck capped with a stainless steel threshold plate. Its four easy steps down the companionway stairs (not steep enough to be called a ladder). Natural teak slatted treads with angles sides, and a grab rail to starboard will keep this a safe transition even in foul weather. The top tread is hinged for quick engine inspection. The next tread hinges open to access a trash bin. The bottom two steps are slid out for engine front access. LA LUNA is laid out for safe passagemaking and extended living in port and at sea. Forward most is an ensuite head with separate stall shower. The master stateroom is next aft and full beam. The salon is aft of the main bulkhead with and “L” shaped settee to port and straight settee to starboard. The “L” shaped galley is to port of the companionway and the aft heat to starboard. The navigation station is aft of the galley to port while the guest stateroom is aft and to starboard.
The amount of solid, varnished, even grained teak comprising LA LUNA’s interior is impressive, elegant and functional. Her original owner specified many custom upgrades over the more stark/white interior found on most Calibers. Solid teak trim protects plywood panels with mitered joints. The overhead is padded white vinyl with long teak battens. The cabin sole is teak and holy and fitted with sufficient access panels. Main salon upholstery is white ultraleather. Locker doors are of solid teak and fully louvered for ventilation. All cabin doors are paneled. Ocean Air roller blind/screens are fitted on the two large overhead hatches. Custom opaque acrylic blinds for the cabinside ports are ingeniously held in place with magnets. All cabinet doors are fitted with positive closing latches. Countertops are Corian and fiddled. LED bulbs are installed in the many overhead dome lights and Frigast tulip reading lights. Secure handholds are strategically located for movement in rough seas. AC & DC outlets are well distrusted through the interior. Headroom measures 6’ 4” throughout. All interior features comprise to make this a lovely and capable blue water cruiser.
Starting forward is the master head/shower that’s accessed from the owner’s stateroom through a locking privacy door. Mirrors are fitted on the door’s inside panel. The head compartment is built from molded gel-coat finished, molded fiberglass with teak trim. This finish is bright and easy to clean. A Raritan marine head is aft and outboard. A green and white-flecked Corian counter is outboard along the hull side and fitted with 1-1/2” high teak fiddles. An opening port and overhead hatch provide light and ventilation. A teak trimmed shaving/makeup mirror is secured to the hull side above the counter. A single lever faucet is fitted to the 11” x 8” x 6” deep oval fiberglass underhung sink. A medicine cabinet is mounted in the forward bulkhead and has a teak trimmed mirror door. The large stall shower is forward and to port. A hinged, clear acrylic door keep shower water inside this space. A non-skid shower pan, drain, and overboard discharge pump serve the shower. A Scandvik shower nozzle bar holds the hose and shower nozzle. A seat is molded into the shower stall for seated showering in rough weather or leg shaving as is the practice of females, bike racers, or competitive swimmers. An overhead dome light illuminate and vent this space. Four towel hoods, and a toilet paper holder are secured to bulkheads in the head compartment.
The master stateroom is located between the forward head and salon. A louvered-top door to starboard in the main bulkhead closes off this space from the salon. A pullman berth, two feet above the cabin sole measures 6’ 5” long by 3’ wide forward by 4’ 4” wide aft. Teak slats run lengthwise on the hull side. Two reading lights, a dome light, a Caframo cabin fan, 110V and 12V outlets and autopilot remote plug are fitted in this cabin. Beneath the bunk, storage is found in three drawers, cabinets, and top loading bins outboard. A full bank of lockers and shelves run along the starboard hull side. A 3’ long hanging locker is forward and topped by a 3’ long by 19” wide fiddled shelf. Aft of this locker is a locker with three shelves topped by a 2’ long by 19” wide shelve and then a locker with two shelves outboard and above. An angled makeup mirror is fitted in the door to this upper cabinet. An overhead grab rail helps passage through this stateroom to the head. Three opening ports and an overhead hatch keep this space bright during the day and naturally ventilated. The keel stepped mast is wrapped in padded white leather and just inboard of the door to the salon.
The salon is centrally located and open to the galley and companionway. A 40” long by 27” wide table with a 36” long by 13” wide hinged leaf folds down from a storage cabinet in the main bulkhead. Solid stainless steel roundbar legs thread into sole inserts or store alongside the table cabinet. With the table up and secured, the salon is wide and open. The main bulkhead table cabinet has dedicated storage for 5 wine bottles and six glasses. The sculpted and contoured “L” shaped port settee measures 6’ 1” long by 4’ 10”. The starboard settee measures 6’ 1” long by 2’ 2” wide. Thanks to the water and fuel tanks being located beneath the cabin sole, all space outboard of and beneath the settee is available for storage. And, the seat back and bottom cushions are individual in four sections making them much easier to remove for specific bin access vs. one large seat bottom/back cushion as found on most production boats. Three arm rest cushions and four throw pillows pad out these settees. Deep book shelves and storage lockers are on each side outboard of the settees. Overhead grab rails, cowl vents, opening ports, four reading lights, and a dome light all serve this space.
The Galley is to port of the companionway and has white and beige flecked Corian counters with 1-1/2” tall fiddles. A stainless steel stanchion is forward on centerline to support the mainsheet traveller and also makes a good grab bar. Deep double stainless steel sinks measure 12” x 12” x 8” deep. A single lever faucet with pull-out sprayer nozzle is fitted between the sinks. A watermaker test spigot, fridge pump out, and fresh water foot pump and Seagull water filter spigot are located at this sink. An overhead dome light illuminates the galley at night. The fridge/freezer has a 26” x 17” opening top with gas strut. This 9 cubic foot box has 2/3 fridge and 1/3 freezer allocation. Galley storage is found in three shelves below the sink, two cabinets with shelves outboard and below the side decks, and in a bank of drawer to port of the sink. A Force Ten three burner stove with oven and broiler is located aft. A stainless steel crash bar is fitted at this stove. Pot and pan storage is below the oven. A microwave is outboard and above the stove. Two opening cabinside ports and an overhead hatch provide light and illumination. An 18” x 14” flip up shelf is to starboard of the sink.
The outboard facing navigation station is tucked into a cozy alcove aft of the galley. A clear acrylic panel has been fitted to the partial bulkhead between the stove and chart table to protect from splatters. The navigator sits comfortably on a 2’ wide seat with padded back. Storage is below this seat. The chart table measures 32” wide by 21” deep and tops a 2 ½” deep chart drawer. Navigation and communication electronics, and the electrical switch panel our flush mounted in a black faced cabinet above the chart table. A red/white bar light and swing arm light provide controlled illumination. A Lewmar opening port allows communication with the cockpit. A catch bin for binoculars, sunglasses, and other handy items is just inside the companionway to starboard.
The day head is to starboard of the companionway and accessed through privacy doors in the galley and aft cabin. Like the forward head, this compartment is fabricated using gel-coated fiberglass and teak trim, making for an easy to clean yet tasteful space. The Raritan marine head is outboard and aft. Green flecked Corian counter tops a small vanity with white round sink. A Scandvik pull out sink nozzle/hose can be hung from the bulkhead for showering. A teak trimmed mirror is mounted on the forward bulkhead. Three towel hooks and overhead hatch, opening port, and 110V outlet are provided in this head.
The aft cabin is to starboard and entered from the galley or aft head. There’s standing headroom forward in this cabin for dressing. A quarter berth measures 6’ 6” long by 4’ wide forward by 2’ 6” aft. An infill at the forward in is used for couples berthing or removed when used by a single crew member. Bin storage is located beneath the berth. Teak slats line the hull side outboard of the berth. A 2’ long hanging locker is forward and outboard. A cabin fan, reading light, 110V outlet, overhead hatch, and dome light are fitted in this cabin.
DECK & HULL:
LA LUNA has a beige gel-coat hull with blue antifouling bottom paint. A thin blue boot stripe and two inch wide blue sheer stripe accentuate the hull lines. A hard plastic rub rail capped with stainless steel protects the hull sides from pilings and other hazards. A stainless steel and teak anchor platform/bow sprit projects the forestay well ahead of the stem and is held in place by a rod bobstay. Two anchor rollers are fitted to in this structure. An aluminum toe rail with oval “lashing” holes tops the hull/deck joint on each side. 28” high double lifelines run from bow pulpit to the midship’s boarding gate and are supported by stainless steel stanchions. A midship’s boarding gate is to port and starboard. Aft of this boarding gate stainless steel tubular handrails provide extra security back to the stern pushpits. This secure handhold is greatly appreciated when moving from the cockpit to the side decks. The stern puspits are fitted with rail seats on each side. The Caliber 40 is a highly functional cruising yacht and as such is constructed with a scoop transom to facilitate easy boarding from dock, dinghy or water. A stainless steel swim ladder (easily deployed from the water for safety) and transom step for cockpit access are fitted on the transom.
The deck is light beige gel-coat with a painted on cream colored non-skid. The non-skid was repainted in June of 2014 with Kiwi grip. The trunk cabin is raised and fitted with numerous opening side ports and overhead hatches. Stainless steel grab rails run along the coachroof on each side. To minimize maintenance, there is very little exterior wood. A large top opening shelf style bow locker stores anchor rodes, wash down hose, chain snubber, and other gear. A hose bib supplies fresh or salt water for chain or deck washing.
The large “T”-shaped cockpit is protected by an Iverson’s Design cockpit dodger, bimini, connector panel, and full enclosure side/back panels. Raised coamings keep side deck water out of the cockpit and are wide enough for sitting or stepping on. The coaming tops are inlaid with teak and rubber. The comfortable cockpit seats measure 20” wide with 12” backs, and are 64” long. The “T” shape, aft of the settees allows one to walk around the helm without stepping up onto the seats and to sit comfortably on the cockpit coaming while steering. Infills constructed of marine grade Star Board plastic fill extend the cockpit settees aft for sleeping or lounging at anchor. A 14” wide athwartship seat is aft of the helm. An array of navigation and communications electronics are housed in Nav Pods on the steering pedestal. The fold down cockpit table nicely holds cocktails or with leafs deployed will dine four. They Yanmar engine panels is mounted in a recess in the port cockpit coaming and protected by clear acrylic. A large propane locker is to port beneath the helm seat. The hot/cold fresh water shower is housed in the starboard helm locker where additional space currently stores oils and other flammables. A huge “climb-in” locker with a 22” x 14” opening is beneath a hatch in the port settee. Access to steering, storage, and auxiliary equipment is in this space.

SAILS & RIGGING:
LA LUNA is set up for shorthanded offshore passagemaking. Her cutter rig nicely manages fore triangle sail area. All lines are led aft to the cockpit to banks of sheet stoppers and a powered halyard/sheet winch. The primary, coaming mounted winches are powered. Most of the running rigging has been upgraded with high tech Samson cordage by Pt. Townsend Rigging. The Selden anodized aluminum mast and boom are far easier to maintain over the long haul than painted spars and benefit. Hasse & Company mainsail, staysail, and genoa were purchased in 2011 and the gold standards for blue water cruising.
