MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS

OUR AWARD-WINNING OCEAN-GOING SAIL BOAT.

Conceived to bring significant improvements to the already successful Oyster 61 and 62 ocean-going sail boats, the triple award-winning Oyster 625 is a sub 20m sailing yacht designed for easy family and friends sailing.

Building on what were already proven Oyster yachts, Humphreys Yacht Design devised an improved hull form to provide this ocean-going sail boat with increased performance and handling. Other enhancements included a sportier rig, increased space in the master cabin, and the choice of several interior arrangements.

The 625 offers spacious interiors for a sailing yacht below 20m, with generously proportioned galley, a full-beam owner’s suite, two en suite cabins forward and a fourth cabin that offered a number of different configurations.

In this design, particular emphasis was placed on outdoor living, with safe navigation and easy sailing facilitated by a large cockpit, flat aft deck and forward sun deck. Her design showcases a cleaner, more modern bulwark profile, with wide side decks and integral fittings for easy movement from bow to stern. The smoother, flush lines of her foredeck provide more deck space than the Oyster 62.

Below decks, the 625’s saloon houses what are now the Oyster’s signature triple ‘seascape’ windows, with three vertical portlights set into the port and starboard sides of her hull, providing a new perspective of her cruising grounds and breathtaking views out over the water – a real superyacht feature.

With an overall length of just under 19.4m (63.5ft) the Oyster 625 has a displacement-length ratio of 182 and a sail-area displacement ratio of 22.3 making her a true ocean-going sail boat that delivers outstanding performance and comfortable cruising in the 20m sailing yacht class.

The items in italic highlight the non-standard items fitted during the build programme or added by the owner thereafter.

1. CONSTRUCTION 

HULL NUMBER – Oyster 625.12.

HULL CONSTRUCTION – A composite construction moulded from female tools developed by Oyster in their own custom facility, closely supervised by the Oyster Design Team.
Moulded using a combination of vinylester and polyester resin with the outer topside finish in a white special NPG gelcoat.
Laminate material comprises a combination of E-glass, Kevlar, and Carbon Fibre specially designed for the yacht by the Oyster Design Team’s own structural engineers. This ‘custom’ laminate offers significant weight savings, strength and stiffness advantages over a normal GRP construction, carbon for weight and stiffness, Kevlar for impact resistance.
Topside laminate incorporates a high-tech, foam-cored, E-glass/Carbon sandwich above the waterline for additional strength, stiffness, and insulation. This ‘core’ is applied using a vacuum bagging technique.
Below the waterline, the hull features a monolithic (single-skin) composite laminate, with an Aramid/Kevlar layer, reinforced with a matrix of stringers and floors. Combined with BS1088 standard marine-ply structural bulkheads, this produces a robust structure, with excellent strength to weight qualities and proven longevity.
Additional reinforcements are included in the way of the keel recess, the keel longitudinals, mast bulkhead, P-bracket, forestay, and hull stringers.
Limber holes and/or tubes are installed at appropriate points. Stringers, bulkhead-landings, and floors are formed over a non-structural, inert, polyurethane foam.

HULL FINISH – ‘Light Grey’ gelcoat hull with cove line and double boot top lines in ‘Dusty Grey.’ Coppercoat antifouling.

DECK CONSTRUCTION – Moulded in GRP with a foam core. In load-bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood for additional strength, and all load-bearing fittings have backing plates or large washers.
The vessel is fitted with an eyebrow detail on the main saloon deck house, which combined with recessed windows lowers the apparent height of the main saloon. Pair of stainless steel grab rails fitted.
Main saloon roof fitted with recessed laid teak decking aft of the sprayhood rail. Forward of this, the area has a non-slip finish.

DECK FINISH – The weather deck cockpit seats, and sole areas are finished with quarter-sawn teak planking, laid using epoxy adhesive with no visible fastenings. All locker hinges, catches, and fillers are recessed into teak planking, where appropriate.
The deck edge incorporates a bulwark, which facilitates relatively flat side decks whilst providing a good foothold when working the yacht in a seaway. The top of this bulwark has a clean GRP finish, giving a modern and stylish ‘rolled’ edge, enhancing the yacht’s visual appearance with a graceful sheer line.

KEEL – High performance bulb (HPB) external lead keel.

RUDDER – Fully protected skeg-hung rudder.

STERN DESIGN – The stern design incorporates a recessed platform, which is especially useful for bathing and boarding and is trimmed with laid teak. Fold-down stainless steel bathing/boarding ladder with oval treads, fitted with a lanyard and retaining pin for retrieval/stowage. Platform accessed via an integral stairway from the aft deck.

EURCD – Built to comply with the requirements for Category A – Ocean.

2. DECK LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENT 

ANCHOR – 55kg Rocna galvanised anchor that stows in the stemhead fitting, plus 125m of 12mm calibrated galvanised chain fitted to match the windlass, fastened at its bitter end to the underside of the stemhead.
20kg Spade S100 collapsible kedge anchor, plus 100m of 18mm warp with stainless steel thimble, and 10m of 12mm chain.
Recessed locker within the foredeck for anchor chain stowage, which is fitted with hinged lids and a stainless steel clamp-type locking device. Anchor locker divided with a removable athwartships partition for kedge anchor stowage. Plastic drainage grille fitted in base of forward part of anchor locker. 

WINDLASS – Lewmar V6 heavy-duty vertical capstan type (24V) electric anchor windlass installed on deck, so that the anchor chain stows in the chain locker located forward.
The windlass is two-way and operated by adjacent foot switch controls. It can also be lowered and raised from the port side pedestal control.

DECK ACCESS – Midship gateway stanchions with stainless steel hinged boarding ladders, which close up to form the side-gates.

Large acrylic fold-down companionway sprayhood fitted over custom stainless steel hoops. The hood incorporates see-through panels in its forward portion, of which the centre panel can be opened for extra ventilation. Stainless steel grab handle to aft hoop of sprayhood frame with leather cover.
Fixed bimini with GRP hard top, including solar panels. Grab rail on underside of bimini sides. Zip-on side and aft panels. Side panels have clear 20/20 windows. Mesh side screens, which are clipped out to the guard wires. Forward section of bimini screen includes zip-up window in 20/20 Strataglass. Inner mesh panel for inside of front section of screen, including roll-up window.
Padded cockpit table cover with mesh storage pockets, leather corners, and velcro access flap to refrigerated cool box.

DECK PLUMBING – Hot and cold freshwater deck shower located in its own locker within the transom. Deck wash fitting under transom steps, tee’d off shower cold water supply. Threaded end, so Hozelock Quick-Fit connector can be used.
Freshwater anchor/deck wash (from ship’s main) in bow, including hose.
Saltwater anchor/deck wash (stand alone) in bow, including hose. Pump is 26.5 litres per minute, and 5.7 bar.

COCKPIT – The cockpit is split into two distinct areas with the forward part for crew and guests, and aft for the helmsman. Both sections are self-draining via two cockpit drains.
Twin custom GRP lectern style cockpit pedestals incorporate the controls and instruments, with a Whitlock single lever engine control on the inboard side of the port pedestal. Instruments are set into a custom ‘grey’ panel.
Four waterproof loudspeakers fitted into the underside of the fixed bimini, connected to the stereo system.
Port side helm seat includes a rope tail locker for the mainsheet with hinged lid, and both helm stations have a curved stainless steel tubular backrest with permanent vinyl covered cushioning.
Port and starboard of the companionway hatch are two rectangular shaped troughs providing useful stowage for small, loose items required on deck. Teak-topped lift up hinged lids fitted to recessed bins either side of companionway, supported by spring stays.

COCKPIT TABLE – Gloss varnished teak-topped cockpit table with fold-down leaves, permanently installed in a robust stainless steel frame incorporating fore and aft foot bars, that provide useful support for crew when the yacht is heeled. Folding extension leaves to both ends of the table, where extra support legs are fitted to the stainless steel frame to accommodate these.
Two hinged lids give access to a GRP insulated cool box within the table, which is refrigerated via a Frigomatic 24V (keel-cooled) refrigeration unit.

STEERING – Twin GRP lectern type pedestals each incorporating a 1.12m (44”) diameter Mini-Maxi type stainless steel wheel, friction brake, and three bearing pedestal steering unit. Steering wheels covered with ‘brown’ suede leather that extends to partially cover the spokes.

DAVITS – Cooney S300 electric davits (300kg maximum total load) complete with belly bands. Upgraded with Dyneema rope.

GENERAL – Stainless steel pulpit and pushpit.
Stainless steel stanchions and bases, with double stainless steel wire guardrails mounted on bulwark.
Fold-down stainless steel mooring cleats, and stainless steel cockpit cleats. Aft stainless steel fairleads and fixed cleats, mounted port and starboard for stern-to mooring.

4. INTERIOR 

GENERAL – Seven berths in four cabins, excluding the saloon. All sea berths have Dacron lee screens fitted with lanyards to removable-eye mounting points.
Interior joinery finished in American white oak with matt Osmo ‘Snow’ limed effect. Cabin sole in V-groove walnut planking with satin varnish finish. Wide sole margins in solid walnut.
Designed to be modern and coordinated, whilst remaining practical and durable at sea. Essential features include sculpted fiddles and grab rails, ‘shadow-gap’ joints between joinery panels, solid shaped timber and stainless steel grab handles, and solid walnut framed styled doors, with laid veneers, walnut style line, and soft-close seals.
Door furniture with chrome hinges and handles. All drawers use metal runners with a soft-close feature, which give extremely smooth operation.
Lockers have flush catches, and are fitted with shelves and fiddles, as appropriate. Hanging lockers are lined with cedar wood ply panels.
Galley countertops in ‘grey’ Silestone with upstand surrounds, and routered drainage grooves.
Three head/shower compartments each incorporating a moulded ‘white’ washbasin set into a flat gloss finished ‘Back Roads’ Avonite solid surface. Hansgrohe quality mixer taps and thermostatic shower controls are installed, together with matching towel rail, toothbrush tumbler, soap dispenser, toilet roll holder, and toilet brush. Showers are separated from toilet areas by an acrylic door with ‘Polar White Frost’ translucent finish.
Headlining in ‘off-white’ vinyl, which is also used to cover the deck saloon sides. Hull ports are set into GRP liner mouldings. Removable flock-backed mast cover in headlining vinyl with velcro fastening. Saloon table cover in flock-backed headlining vinyl.
Freshwater Dometic MasterFlush electric toilets, with large porcelain bowls. The port forward guest toilet incorporates an emergency saltwater changeover and non-return valve.
Saloon settees, navigator’s seat, and aft cabin seating in ‘Armonia’ Alcantara. Upholstered and padded panels for headboards, seating, and berth side, where appropriate. Mattress covers in Planada Crush ‘Vanilla’ fabric.

FORWARD SAIL LOCKER – Forward sail locker accessed via a teak laid flush hatch, and a watertight door via the forward port head, with three folding steps on the bulkhead, plus warp stowage rail. Teak slatting on hull-side, plus breather pipe run from forward port dorade into sail locker provide ventilation.
Stowage for gennaker via alloy pole with sail cloth screen to port. Cave locker unit fitted up to top of stringer height, under sail stowage. Plywood pocket to accept foredeck cushions on top of cave locker.
Stainless steel iron rack at forward end, with plastic boxes for stowage. Lee cloth screen over aft face of this stack to retain boxes within framework.
Remote heavy-duty circuit breaker for bow thruster.

FORWARD PORT HEAD/SHOWER AND DAY HEAD – Located forward to port and accessed from the passageway this head compartment is used mainly by the forward port guest cabin, and also doubles as a day head. Incorporating a washbasin, toilet, and separate shower stall, plus lockers for wash bag and towel stowage. Whale ‘Twist’ deck shower fitted beside toilet, with valve so it can be isolated. Amtico Spacia ‘Linear Stone Peat’ flooring.

FORWARD PORT TWIN GUEST CABIN – Situated forward of the saloon to port is a twin guest cabin, with upper and lower berths, plus a hanging locker. Mirror on forward bulkhead.

FORWARD STARBOARD DOUBLE GUEST STATEROOM – To starboard and forward of the saloon is a double guest stateroom, with hanging locker. Access to the en suite head/shower compartment located forward.

EN SUITE HEAD/SHOWER – Incorporating a washbasin, toilet, and separate shower stall, plus lockers for wash bag and towel stowage. Amtico Spacia ‘Linear Stone Peat’ flooring.

SALOON – Access to the saloon from the cockpit is down a set of shaped timber companionway steps, set into a stainless steel ladder frame, with two oval laminated walnut grab handles fitted either side of the opening. Locker door inspection hatch fitted into starboard side of companionway step buttress.
The saloon is extremely light and airy, with seven deck saloon windows, of which two of the three forward ones open. Six vertical fixed windows to the hull sides give a ‘seascape’ vista whilst at anchor.
Featuring a dining table and settee area to starboard, outboard of which is a locker and a central shelf to the hull ports. The opening leaf style table in quarter-sawn oak with Osmo ‘Snow’ limed finish and walnut style line is a substantial piece of furniture, with a bottle locker located in its base, and handhold cut-outs in its top. Two folding alloy-framed director’s chairs provide extra in-harbour seating at the table or even on deck.
To port are two FSM ‘Smile’ reclining chairs, fixed to the soles for seagoing, but easily removable to allow reclining.
TV on electric lift installed outboard. Drinks locker appropriately laid out with stowage for bottles and glasses, with automatic light.
Small shelf on bulkhead aft of chart table for carriage clock.
Kick recesses in Arpa ‘charcoal’ laminate.

NAVIGATION/CHART TABLE AREA – Situated at the aft starboard end of the saloon the chart table is customised around the flush-mounted electronics and navigational equipment, which is strategically sited and housed in a satin varnished walnut fascia, and positioned for optimum viewing.
The chart table can accommodate a half-folded full size Admiralty chart, and there is provision for stowage of charts. A small stainless steel support stay is fitted to the lift-up lid. Stowage for navigational books and almanacs.
AC and DC electrical panels. Oilskin locker with shelves, aft of the chart table.

GALLEY – Located to port of the cockpit in the passageway to the aft cabin. Rubbish bin fitted inside locker door at the forward end of the galley, with top access via the Silestone work surface. Stowage for crockery, cutlery, glasses, and kitchen utensils.
Salad drawer with lift-out tray, and refrigerated via a DW70 refrigeration unit.
Set of five Wüsthof classic knives in knife block, with sharpening steel. Spice rack/shelves with removable timber fiddles in shallow locker over refrigerator. COOKER/HOB – Gimballed GN Espace OceanChef XL cooker in stainless steel with five burners, grill and oven, all protected by a flame failure gas cut-off device. The cooker incorporates an electronic ignition system for all functions. Heavy gauge fiddle rail fitted around top of cooker, which incorporates a pair of adjustable clamping pan holders. Harbour lock and cooker crash bar. Fire blanket.
For additional safety an electric gas solenoid valve controls the gas flow from the bottle and is operated remotely by an illuminated switch near the cooker.
Alpes Inox stainless steel cooker hood, with recirculating air fan, overhead light, and filter.

MICROWAVE/GRILL – Panasonic stainless steel (900W) combined microwave oven and grill.

REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER – Front-opening stainless steel refrigerator cooled via a Frigomatic 24V refrigeration system, and fitted with fiddled shelves, plus automatic door light.

STARBOARD AFT TWIN CABIN/WORKSHOP – Aft of the navigation area is a guest cabin/workshop, with single berth over a workbench, and storage beneath, consisting of a single drawer with three internal removable dividers across the top, and lockers below. Timber side panel, outboard of the berth.
Berth mattress folds up out the way when worktop is required. Area under aft end of workbench for cockpit cushion stowage.
Access to the engine.

ENGINE ROOM – Built of a sound insulating plywood, the engine room is insulated with a composite of foam and high density polymer sound absorbing materials. Accessed via double doors from the starboard midships cabin, where all access panels are fitted with rubber sealing strips to minimise noise and secured by positive catches.
24V lighting, and two 24V extractor fans are installed, and switched at the DC electrical panel. These fans are designed to be used after the engine has been shut down, to evacuate hot air from the engine space, not to be run continuously.
An automatic fire extinguisher is installed with a remote indicator light, and a further automatic fire extinguisher is mounted within the generator sound shield, specifically for the generator.

OWNER’S STATEROOM – Configured with a double berth offset from centreline to port, hanging locker, with 4-brick safe and digital keypad, plus abundant drawer and locker space.
Tallboy unit with two shelves above for books. Lower unit has two drawers side by side, with a two door locker beneath. Walnut shelves.
Vanity desk and seat to starboard, with storage aft of it. Mirror and light mounted on aft face of bulkhead. Small stowage bin for cosmetics fitted under vanity, outboard of seat. Aft of the vanity seat is a stowage bin with top-access for laundry.

ENGINE – Volvo D4-180 4-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine, with maximum potential power of 132kW (180hp) at 2,800rpm. Upgraded to include NMEA 2000 link to Raymarine display.
Twin coil calorifier unit, so that coolant from engine and generator can be piped through it.

ENGINE HOURS – Approximately 3,690 at April 2024.

PROPELLER – 4-bladed Brunton 660mm (26”) diameter varifold folding propeller.

ROPE CUTTER – Ambassador rope cutter on shaft.

ALTERNATORS – 115A/12V alternator for engine start battery charging.

AIR CONDITIONING/HEATING – 220V Cruisair reverse cycle air conditioning system, giving a total of 58,000 BTUs comprising of:
1 x 16,000 BTU condenser unit in engine room for aft cabin air handler, with one extension duct to aft starboard cabin.
1 x 16,000 BTU self-contained unit for port side saloon and galley.
1 x 16,000 BTU self-contained unit for starboard saloon.
1 x 10,000 BTU split gas unit for forward starboard and forward port cabins.
One air conditioning unit in the saloon is wired so that it can be run from the inverter too. Has the ability to be ‘locked off’ so it cannot be run accidentally through inverter.

WATERMAKER – Seafresh 208A (220V) AC watermaker (approximately 140 litres per hour), complete with product gauge, and remote panel. Freshwater backflush with dedicated pump.

7. TANKAGE AND PLUMBING

FUEL – 2,000 litres approximately (440 Imp gallons/528 US gallons) in two GRP tanks, installed under the deck saloon floor.
Racor P5 fuel polishing system fitted to each tank.
Racor twin 75/500 FG filter system with changeover, vacuum gauge, and stainless steel drip tray. Installed with warning light at the electrical panel, one for generator, and one for engine.

WATER – 1,600 litres approximately (352 Imp gallons/423 US gallons) in two GRP tanks.

TANK TENDER GAUGES – Offshore Systems tank monitoring system for fuel and water tanks.
Backup calibrated dipsticks, and calibration chart.

HOT WATER – From an insulated approximately 40 litre tank heated by the engine’s heat exchanger, or by thermostatically-controlled 220V, 1.25kW immersion heater element powered by the generator or dockside power. Thermostatic safety blender valve and expansion tank.

PRESSURISED HOT AND COLD WATER SYSTEM – Hot and cold freshwater system based on a high capacity water pump with PEX/PBT pipework and fittings.
Seafresh carbon limescale filter fit into suction line of freshwater pump.
Silverline UV-DS55 (36 litres per minute) UV filter system in lazarette, fitted on supply to freshwater tank. Quick-Fit connector on transom to run 1/2” filler pipe through UV filter to freshwater tanks.

HOLDING TANKS – All three toilets have gravity discharge plastic (Polyethylene) holding tanks fitted in-line with their discharge pipes. Tanks are fitted with a contents gauge, deck pump out, and flushing points.

GREY WATER – Showers and washbasins drain into local grey water sump tanks, and are then evacuated by an electric Whale ‘Gulper’ pump directly overboard.
The galley sink also empties via an electric Whale ‘Gulper’ pump.
These pumps are operated by Vimar rocker switches.
Shower boxes have float switches with a manual backup switch.

Historical Damage Disclosure:

On 30th October 2017 a fire broke out onboard BUBBLES while at Breakwater Cove Marina in Monterey, California. The fire started when the deck lights were turned on in the evening. All deck lights and internal lights in the boat were equipped with dimmers. One of the dimmers of the deck light caught on fire.

Shortly after the deck lights were switched on, a smell of burning electric insulation material became apparent and the deck lights were switched off immediately. No smoke was seen and the ceiling plates in the saloon were pulled down to find out where the smell was coming from. No smoke was found, but shortly after smoke started to come from behind the cooling drawer underneath the counter in the galley. All power was disconnected from the galley, but that did not help, and smoke quickly filled the boat. It was still unclear where the fire was. However, the boat filled with smoke within minutes.

I isolated the batteries and shore power then left the boat to call 911. When the fire brigade arrived, it was then obvious that the fire was in the master bedroom above the ceiling. The fire brigade extinguished the fire. The fire above the ceiling destroyed all electric cabling and controls from the pedestals down into the boat. The smoke damage was considerable and the deck above in the cockpit had been damaged due to the heat. As the fire was in the top of the bedroom the bedding had not even burned and the fire nor the heat came anywhere close to the hull.

I insisted that the boat was returned to Oyster for repairs as they were the only ones, in my opinion, that could return BUBBLES back to its original condition as being like new. That is exactly what happened. The deck of the cockpit was replaced, and the entire boat was cleaned thoroughly to remove all smoke stain and smell. While the cockpit floor was removed, the Volvo engine, and generator were removed and sent to the dealers to have a full service. Several items throughout the boat were renewed and all equipment was checked. In April 2019, BUBBLES was handed back to us and we have enjoyed sailing her again ever since.
