Interior Layout

The interior of BERNARD is warm and inviting with satin finished cherry, reflective white overheads and teak cabin sole.  She will sleep up to 7 in two enclosed cabins, a convertible salon table and a settee.  The plan is open with galley, nav and main salon in great proximity to the cockpit which is an easy three steps above the cabin sole. Head Room is 6’5” in the Main Salon.  Ventilation is excellent with seven opening hatches, ten opening ports and two dorade vents. Hand holds are well placed throughout the boat.  The interior surfaces have been maintained in near perfect order.

Starting forward is the owner’s stateroom with centerline double berth, cherry stavings on the ceilings and white overhead liner trimmed with cherry. There are settees port and starboard of the berth with storage under each seat. The double bunk is a custom HMC sprung mattress. Storage is available under the berth, in two drawers under the aft portion of the berth and in two small, vented lockers with storage above. There is a large hanging locker aft and to port. A small rail with fiddle is outboard the berth on both port and starboard sides. There are port lights in the hull, and two overhead hatches with Skyshade blinds, and one opening port. There are reading lights and overhead lights. The glassed in water tank is also under the berth.

The ensuite head is finished in easily maintained, white molded fiberglass and includes a Vacuflush toilet with fold down seat, shower with sump pump, molded sink with storage below and mirror above. There is a locker outboard the toilet. An opening port and hatch provide good ventilation.

The galley is to starboard of the companionway and is a great seagoing galley. Counters are white Corian-like and provide ample working surface for meal preparation. A large storage locker is below the forward section of the counter with Force Ten three burner stove aft and double stainless steel sink.  An Adler Barbour refrigerator/freezer with top opening freezer and front opening refrigerator is along the aft counter with microwave mounted above. Storage is available in three cabinets with louvered vents outboard the counter, small cabinet outboard of the microwave and under the sink. The trash can which is under the forward counter can also be accessed through an opening in the forward portion of the counter. There are two opening ports and an opening hatch for ventilation with an additional fixed port in the hull side.

To port of the companionway is the aft facing nav station. The chart table is top opening with instruments mounted in a cabinet above and additional storage in a nook under the table. Outboard of the chart table are the electrical panels. The port settee serves as the nav station seat.

The main salon is very spacious. The U-shaped settee with inboard upholstered bench is to starboard and surrounds a lovely oval varnished salon table with removable center leaf. The settee converts to a double berth. The pressure water pump and water heater under the aft section and storage under the bench seat There are louvered lockers on each side of the outboard bookshelf and an additional bookshelf with two shelves forward of the settee.  The center seat has benefited from the addition of a custom seat back with chrome stainless grab rail.   Opposite the U-shaped settee is a straight settee with bookshelf outboard and two louvered lockers above, a storage cabinet/ side table forward. Two fixed ports in the hull above both settees provide light and a window to outside. Ventilation is excellent with four opening ports and two hatches.

Aft of the companionway to port is the double berth stateroom. Large berth, cherry veneers and white head liner make this a very comfortable space. Storage is available in a cabinet and large hanging locker to starboard, and there is a large shelf/tabletop to port. A long shelf is outboard the berth on the port side. There are overhead and reading lights, and opening ports and hatch for ventilation. The fuel tank, inverter/charger and two 4d batteries are located under the berth. The aft head is accessed from the stateroom and includes a manual toilet, shower and molded sink with storage below and a mirror outboard and forward. There is one opening port. The head also opens to the main salon adjacent to the companionway steps.

The engine room is under the companionway steps which are raised with the help of pneumatic lifting arms. Additional access is from the galley and aft stateroom.

Hull and Deck

Designed by Farr Design Group, BERNARD has a modern under body.  She has a bulbed fin keel and an independent spade hung rudder. The hull sides are a white gelcoat.  The gelcoat is in excellent condition and shines.  Her topsides are white with molded in nonskid.  The reverse transom has a swim step and the helm seat lifts up for a true walk through transom.  The custom stainless-steel arch also acts as a dinghy davit for the Walker Bay dinghy.  The radar and various other antennas are mounted on the arch. The toe rail was upgraded to an aluminum capped rail.  No varnish maintenance here!  There is a recent bimini and dodger.  All the hatches are Lewmar Ocean Series and have been covered as well.  The Simpson Lawrence electric windlass looks like new.  It was serviced in 2014 with her bearings replace and a new powder coat.  The windlass is operated with a wireless remote (for use when at the helm or by another wired remote from the foredeck).

Electronics

The electronics package aboard BERNARD is impressive with thought given for those who wish to race or cruise to faraway places.  Though some of the electronics are dated, everything is there for the yachtsman wishing to make use of the data available today.   The instruments have been wired to a Digital Yacht AIS receiver/NMEA multiplexer and wifi transmitter.  In addition to being an AIS receiver, this multiplexer compiles the NMEA data and allows you to receive NMEA data (including AIS) on WIFI enabled devices such as Ipad or smart phone.  The large Raymarine ST60 Max view displays mounted on the companion way exterior bulkhead give you easy to see numbers for night sailing.   On the entertainment side is the Samsung flat screen and Blu-Ray player.  The Kenwood Stereo is Sirius Satellite Radio enabled, with great sound coming out of the Bose speakers and subwoofer.

Rigging and Sails

The owner’s emphasis has been on performance cruising with the occasional fun race thrown in. The sails reflect this in that they are for the most part racing sails.  The Mainsail is a North Sails Full Batten 3DL, mounted on a Harken Battcar system.  There are 5 spinnakers both symmetric and asymmetric sails. Most of the sails are in excellent shape with a lot of life left.  The spinnaker pole is Carbon and mounted on the mast.   The boom was replaced in 2006.  All the running rigging is in excellent condition.
