The Robert Perry designed Tayana 48 is a perfect blend of expertise in cruising sailboat design and construction by a quality shipyard. The Tayana 48’s fin keel and skeg-hung rudder provide great sailing performance and she is easily sailed by a shorthanded crew with her electric genoa furling, staysail on fixed furler and Leisure Furl boom with electric main halyard winch. A full cockpit enclosure protects the crew from sun, wind and adverse weather. Below decks, Viking’s beautiful teak joinery creates a comfortable atmosphere. The three stateroom/two head layout is a comfortable arrangement for a large crew, while still providing privacy and separated living spaces. Storage is well configured and ventilation is excellent with opening ports, large deck hatches, dorade vents and cabin fans.

Viking is a well-equipped and blue water ready Tayana 48. All upgrades by the current owner were undertaken with offshore sailing, sail handling and security at anchor in mind.

Accommodations

Viking’s comfortable three cabin, two head layout provides excellent private accommodations for two couples with two additional single berths for extended cruising. Quality materials and superb craftsmanship are evident throughout. The interior is finished in solid teak and teak veneers with practical use of Corian in the heads and galley. Cabinet doors are solid teak, radiused and louvered. Latches are positive pop out pushbutton. Cabin doors are paneled with solid teak frames and radiused openings. Louvers in door bottoms maintain air circulation. The cabin sole is teak and holly and the headliner is white with teak trim. Lewmar hatches, stainless steel opening ports, and deck vents provide excellent ventilation. All overhead hatches have wood-framed screens. Courtesy lights illuminate the cabin sole at night with a switch at the companionway. Ample handholds, countertop fiddles, and hold open door latches will be appreciated underway.

Starting forward is a guest stateroom. This cabin is entered through a locking privacy door at the end of the forward passageway. Froli STAR mattress spring systems are used beneath the “V” berth, lower bunk, and master stateroom mattresses to improve sleeping comfort and eliminate condensation. Two lockers are aft on each side, above the berth, beneath the deck edge. To starboard and aft is a hanging locker. To port and aft is a bureau with three drawer, front opening bin, open shelf, and cabinet with mirrored door and two shelves. Headroom measures 6’ 7” in this cabin.

A bunk room is on the port side of the passageway. Two drawers are below the lower bunk. A hanging locker with open shelf is aft and inboard. Headroom measures 6’ 7” in this cabin.

The forward head is to starboard of the passageway. This space is finished in white fiberglass with teak accent trim; a nice combination of bright easy to clean surfaces with elegant wood trim. A Jabsco electric flush head is forward. Outboard is a vanity with Corian countertop. A faucet and oval-shaped stainless-steel sink is undermounted below a gray Corian countertop. Two cabinets with mirrored doors are above the counter. Aft is a storage locker that once contained a washer/dryer.

The salon is raised 6” from the forward passageway. Headroom is generally 6’ 6” in this central living space. To port is a “J”-shaped dinette, with a straight settee to starboard. A varnished teak dining table with inlaid compass rose is to port. Batteries and storage bins are beneath the port settee. Three storage bins are outboard of the port settee back. Double door cabinets flank divided open bookshelves above the settee back. To starboard is a straight settee. The cushions and upholstery were new in 2017. Storage bins are outboard the seat back. Two lockers with shelves are above the settee forward of a flat screen TV.

The navigation station is to starboard of the companionway ladder and open to the salon and galley for socializing, yet distinctly set apart when it’s time for work. Storage below the table is accessed via three different openings. Dividers nicely organize this space for tools and paper charts. A comfortable, upholstered chair swings out on a polished stainless-steel pedestal. There is ample legroom aft for extended periods of charting and study. Below the chart table are storage cabinets with shelves; the outboard being very deep and voluminous. Above the chart table is a wrapping console with navigation, communications, and electrical breakers controls, and monitors. A bookshelf is above the console aft.

Everyone from haute chef to chief bottle washer will appreciate the large, functional passageway galley which is located to port and down 6” from the salon. Corian countertops, tall fiddles, toe kicks, and ample light make this space very functional. Inboard, below the cockpit is section of counter. A stainless sink is fitted with a single lever pull-out sprayer faucet. Contrasting teak/holly covers are form fitted to the sinks. A top opening garbage bin is forward of the sink. A microwave oven is housed in a custom cabinet aft of the sink. Outboard, below the counter is a narrow bank of four drawers just forward of the stove/oven. A stainless-steel crash bar is fitted to this oven. A cover slides up/out over the stove when not in use. A drawer for pans is below the oven. The fridge and freezer boxes can open via top or front doors. These custom boxes are lined with stainless steel, have automatic lights, acrylic shelves, and fitted plastic bins. Large-capacity storage shelves for galley ware and provisions are outboard below the deck edge behind four louvered sliding doors. Headroom measures 6’ 3”.

A huge benefit of center cockpit designs is the private and large master stateroom. Headroom measures 6’ 4”. The centerline berth is easily accessed from port and starboard and features Froli system springs under the mattress. Top opening storage bins are aft of dressing seats (storage bins below seats) on each side of the berth. Two storage lockers are outboard along the hull sides outboard of the seats. o port/forward is a hanging locker. To starboard/forward is a vanity with four drawers and open shelf and locker with mirrored door. On centerline forward is a bureau with four large drawers and a double door locker with shelves. A bookshelf is atop this bureau.

An ensuite aft head is to starboard and forward of the stateroom and closed with a locking privacy door. Headroom is 6’ 3” in the head and shower stall. Inboard is a vanity with Corian counter, stainless sink, and faucet. A mirror is above the sink. A electric flush toilet is outboard just forward of a narrow cabinet with shelves. A locker with shelves and double/louvered doors is outboard and above the head. The stall shower is forward and closed with a hinged, teak-framed smoked acrylic door.

Headroom throughout her interior is excellent: 7’ in the salon, 6’3” in the galley, 6’3” in the aft stateroom, 6’5” in the guest cabin, and 6’7” beneath the bimini.

Deck and Hull

Viking’s underbody features a moderate chord length fin keel with skeg hung rudder. Her hull is hand laid fiberglass cored above the waterline with PVC foam and finished in white gelcoat with a navy blue pin stripe. Her open stern platform with teak deck and stainless ladder provides fantastic space to launch and board the dinghy. A fresh water stern shower is available to rinse off after swimming. There are high capacity stainless dinghy davits which hold her large RIB dinghy. Her deck is cored fiberglass with smooth surfaces in white gelcoat and molded nonskid surfaces. Her wide side decks are surrounded by double lifelines and a molded bulwark with teak cap rail. The cap rail and teak grabrails are bare teak and the cap rail is fitted with stainless rub strips where fenders hang. Stanchions, bow pulpit and pushpit are 1.25 inch diameter stainless steel. A stainless arch integrated with the pushput supports her large solar array and additional panels are mounted on the lifelies. There are boarding gates to port and starboard. The center cockpit is well configured for comfort under sail or at anchor. At the aft end is a Whitlock pedestal with leather covered stainless destroyer wheel. A teak cockpit table folds flush against the forward end of the pedestal. A canvas dodger and enclosure protect the cockpit. The cockpit seats are overlayed with teak. On the aft deck there is a propane locker to port and a storage locker to starboard.

In 2020, Viking’s hull below the waterline was stripped to bare gelcoat and new barrier coat applied.
