The Valiant 42 is Bob Perry’s own answer to the first definitive performance cruiser, the Valiant 40. The 42, created when Valiant moved to Texas, gave Perry the chance to update the 40’s design and for builder Rich Worstell to update its construction. The result was a stiffer, more powerful and better performing cruiser that retained and improved upon the remarkable look and reputation of the Valiant 40. Surf Ride is a Valiant 42 with a turn of speed, having won her class in the Baja Haha.

The 42’s tale is only half Surf Ride’s story. Surf Ride was ordered new by her experienced owner, who spared no expense outfitting her for serious voyaging. And while she has many offshore miles under her keel, her maintenance — both mechanical and cosmetic — has been superlative.

The owner has set Surf Ride up as an exceptional offshore vessel, from the self-steering gear to the extended hard dodger top to her rebuilt Westerbeke, Surf Ride is more than ready for her next passage.

Interior Accommodations

There were several interior options for Valiant 42s. This one is the center entry queen layout with a centerline main hatch, one head and a V-berth forward. The 42’s voluminous hull jprovides plenty of room for comfortable cruising. As you come down the companionway, a double quarter berth, which can be closed off from the rest of the cabin, is located to port. The head with a separate shower stall is to starboard. Moving forward, the galley is to port and the navigation table to starboard.  Bob Perry is a fine cook himself, and the spacious galley to port reflects this. The navigation station is complete and features a separate laptop loaded with Open CPN and worldwide charts.

A centerline dropleaf table can seat 6, with an L-shaped settee to port and settee to starboard. Abundant, accessible storage is located outboard. There are solid handholds throughout.

The forward cabin has two seats, making stepping up to the V-berth easy. Cabinetry port and starboard provide ample storage for clothing and personal gear.

Overall, the upholstery and joinery is in excellent condition. Surf Ride was ordered new with a varnished interior, and the finish remains in excellent condition. The 6’5” headroom and high cabin sides give the boat a traditional feel without the traditional compactness. Well defined areas for sleeping, cooking and dining will make this a comfortable cruiser both at sea and at anchor.

Manufacturer Provided Description
The Valiant 42 is the evolutionary successor to the Valiant 40, sharing the look and styling of its legendary predecessor. Over the years, the Valiant line of bluewater passage-makers has always reflected a commitment to product evolution and refinement. Valiant began the major shift in the direction of the Valiant 42 with the introduction of the "Series 90" Vacanti keel. Not only does this keel deliver state-of-the-art performance, it also results in a lower center of gravity and provides for a shoal-draft capability, heretofore unavailable without resorting to centerboards and tricky bulb-type protuberances. Significantly, the Valiant 42 deck features a cockpit that is completely wrapped with an offshore coaming for both comfort and safety. Seating areas are fully guttered and an expanded, recessed propane storage system is included as well. The frontal portion of the cabin trunk is contoured in its transition to the foredeck. The deck design provides for maximum flexibility, while the below-deck volume is increased. There are no predetermined locations for the hatches, portlights and companionway. There are enough variations within the three basic interior arrangements of the Valiant 42 to offer an almost unlimited choice to the customer. The Valiant 42CE or Center Entry, provides for a more open interior and yet allows for a true three-cabin layout. The head is located aft, and the two, separate, double staterooms greatly enhance below-deck livability. The Valiant 42 features a double spreader rig which is matched with a short bowsprit to maximize sailing efficiency.
