Few sailboats can claim the track record of the Catalina 42. With around 800 built (Mk I and II), the design has proven itself many times over. In keeping with the Catalina philosophy, the interior evolved from the Mk I to the Mk II with input of owners. The result is a refined design for both sailing and livability.

The 3-cabin, 2-head design has space for multiple couples or families with kids or grandkids. The forward cabin’s V-berth has access from both sides, and the aft cabins have large doubles. Each cabin has a hanging locker and storage. The main cabin has a starboard side galley with a spacious dinette to port that can seat the whole crew.

On deck, a tall hard-top dodger keeps the weather out of the cabin and is big enough to provide shelter for damp passages. The cockpit opens up to a swim-step transom with built-in lockers. Wide side decks make moving around the boat easy.

The owner of hull #981, Le Jouet, is a USCG captain, and has had the boat since new. Le Jouet has received excellent care and has all maintenance records. She represents an opportunity to join the Catalina family in one their best designs that has been well cared for since new.

Interior Accommodations

The 3-cabin, 2-head layout offers extraordinary flexibility for the cruiser. As a cruising family, a third cabin provides couples privacy or kids their own kingdoms. If the crew isn’t that big, the third cabin creates a very usable storage space.

The forward cabin berth, while it doesn’t have quite the access from each side as an “island,” it does feature seats to step on for getting into, or out of, bed. Generous drawer and hanging locker space means there is no need to live out of duffel bags. An en suite head with separate shower makes the forward cabin a true owner’s sanctuary.

The galley lines the starboard side, and features a top and side loading refrigerator, dry storage space and deep sinks. Opposite to port is the dinette which can seat seven comfortably. A small navigation table sits at the aft end of the dinette.

The aft cabins each have double berths, dressing seats, hanging lockers and shelves. All three sleeping cabins feature spring mattresses. The head in the main cabin is easily accessible from the main or aft cabins or a quick trip from the cockpit.

One feature that sets this Catalina apart is the exceptional amount of ventilation throughout. With multiple hatches and opening ports in each cabin, life below decks feels open and airy.
