1984-swan-46-freya
1984 Swan 46 Freya

Nautor Swans of the 1980s represented the pinnacle of production boat building. Quality designs from the likes of German Frers, plus uncompromising build quality, made these boats the epitome of cruiser-racers. The Swan 46 is one of Frers’ best IOR cruiser-racer designs. It has multiple ocean crossings and many victories, including the Vic-Maui race, to its credit.

Freya spent her early life in Scandanavia. The current owner bought her in Sweden and lived several years in Norway before sailing Freya to the Caribbean in 1998-1999. She came to he Pacific Northwest in 2004.

Freya was modernized with upgrades that make her an exceptional Pacific Northwest cruiser. First and foremost, a carbon fiber pilothouse was added that provides a warm, on deck place for standing watch in cold or drizzly weather or just enjoying a day at anchor in a well lit, warm place. While Swan traditionalists may not like the look, it is a well-executed modification with factory-level execution. The pilothouse has the added advantage of making the companionway less steep. The vessel was repainted and the teak decks removed and replaced with nonskid in 2006.

In short, Freya is a Swan at heart with modifications that make her a great all-weather cruising choice.

Interior Accommodations

Swan interiors are well known for the quality of joinery and timeless style. Freya has had several upgrades, including overhead panels and LED white/red lights on dimmer switches throughout. The cabin sole is in excellent condition and the general condition. The carpentry throughout is in good condition.

Starting at the bow, Freya features a custom-built V-berth with a custom mattress. Just aft to starboard there is a hanging locker, drawers and cabinets. To port is a head with beautiful cabinetry, ample storage and a shower wand.

The main salon features a U-shaped settee arrangement with a table with flip-up leaves to port. A pilot berth is located outboard of the dinette. To starboard there is a settee, at the forward end of which is cabinetry including a heavy duty drawer with additional top access. Lockers and a TV are outboard.

The navigation station is to starboard. Electrical panels, including an additional panel for the pilothouse, are outboard. Inside the navigation seat are the starting battery and two chargers. There is a walk through head leading to the aft cabin.

The inline-line galley is to port. There is a side-opening refrigerator, double sinks and a 3-burner stove with oven. On the centerline engine box there is additional counter space for food preparation.

Freya’s interior features the same basic layout as the stock Swan 46 MK 1 except for the custom V-berth built forward where sail lockers and fold up berths used to be, and the aft cabin lacks headroom where the bridgedeck was and the pilothouse now is. The genset sits inside a sound shield between the single and double berth’s aft.

Hurricane II H2L hydronic heating and on-demand hot water (8.5 gallon tank) (2006)

(2) Raritan Electrosan heads (no holding tanks)

White/red LED lights on dimmers throughout

Glacier GL035-E-2D refrigeration (2007)

UPO Mobilife 3 burner stove with oven

Double stainless steel sinks

Insignia NS32L450A11 TV

Bose Companion3 multimedia speakers

 Navigation Electronics and Communications

ComNav Voyager x3 Class A AIS transceiver

Furuno Navnet TZ Touch 2 integrated chartplotter and radar

Furuno RD-33 electronic compass remote readout

ICOM M604 VHF

Simrad hydraulic linear drive autopilot with wired remote and IS15 instrument head

Furuno FI50 wind angle and speed

 Electrical Systems

24 and 12-volt DC systems

120 Volt AC

Northern Lights M673L 6kW genset

Extensive spares kit for Northern Lights

Perkins 65 amp alternator

AmpTech 125 amp alternator

(4) Odyssey ODS -AGM-470 FFT-220 AH slimline batteries (2023)

Victron Multiplus 24volt, 3000VA inverter charger (needs panel installation at nav station) (2023)

ProMariner Passport 12 battery charger (105 amp charging)

Magnum MS Series 4024 inverter/charger

(2) 12-volt Group 31T NAPA Commercial 125 amp hour

Xantrax Trucharge2 battery charger 20 amp

Balmar Max Charge MC-624 voltage regulator (2011)

Blue Seas DC ammeter and voltmeter

Newmar DC-DC converter

Pilothouse

The pilothouse sets this Swan apart from all others. It provides an excellent place for enjoying the view while out of the elements, either at sea or anchor. It is big enough to comfortably seat eight people, and the settees over 6’, which would make them great for sleeping on deck but out of the elements. It also provides an excellent watch-standing spot.
