Exceptional yachts are often shaped by great sailing experiences. For the owner of the Wylie 80 GEM, the story begins decades before the boat was launched, with youthful days racing 505 dinghies and time spent aboard the classic Philip Rhodes cutter ROWENA.
At first glance, ROWENA and GEM could hardly be more different. ROWENA, a 1963 Philip Rhodes design built by W.F. Stone, is a traditional mahogany cutter that has logged well over 100,000 offshore miles. GEM, on the other hand, is a modern wood-carbon composite sled designed by Tom Wylie, inspired by the legendary Wylie 70 RAGE. One is rooted in traditional yacht design; the other embraces lightweight performance. Yet there are shared priorities.
Racing 505s taught GEM's owner the joy of responsiveness, simplicity, and tiller steering. Time aboard ROWENA revealed the importance of offshore comfort, visibility, and security. Those lessons would ultimately converge in GEM.

The connection is most evident in the cockpit, where design details from ROWENA were incorporated. Despite being separated by more than 60 years of yacht design, both boats feature deep, protected cockpits with substantial coamings and robust dodgers. Rather than serving as dockside entertainment spaces, they are designed for long days at sea. The result is a feeling familiar aboard both yachts: crew are sheltered from wind and spray, conversations remain easy, and watchstanders stay comfortable and engaged. It is the kind of cockpit that encourages people to remain outside and connected to the sailing experience.
Between ROWENA and GEM came RAGE. The Wylie 70 established the formula that inspired GEM during the COVID years: retaining the simplicity, tiller steering, and performance that made RAGE exceptional while adding the comfort and capability needed for extended cruising and passage making. What emerged was a yacht that combines the responsiveness of a dinghy, the performance of a modern sled, and the qualities that have made classic offshore yachts like ROWENA so enduringly appealing.

The most interesting thing about ROWENA and GEM is not how different they are, but how similar they are where it matters most. Both prioritize the experience of sailing with a sheltered, safe and comfortable place on deck for crew.
At Swiftsure Yachts, we recently had the privilege of representing the sale of RAGE and now have the honor of bringing ROWENA to market. Having recently completed GEM's maiden coastal passage from Portland to San Francisco and preparing to join the crew for this summer's Pac Cup race, Swiftsure partner Ryan Helling has seen firsthand the connection between these boats. Despite their differences, both create the same sense of comfort, security, and engagement with the sea.
Every great yacht is more than a collection of specifications, they are part of a larger story. In this case, the story spans generations of yacht design from a classic Rhodes cutter to a modern Wylie sled that are linked by a sailor who never forgot what first inspired him to go to sea.
