The truly exceptional Amazon 44, “Mentor”
Imagine buying a well designed, structurally sound steel hull and then getting to finish and fit it out to the exact specifications you’d like in an ocean-going, round-the-world cruiser. Well, that’s exactly what Mentor’s owners did with this one-of-a-kind Amazon 44 Raised Salon Cutter.
Constructed by renowned steel boat builder Dieter Pollack, this round-chined, raised salon cruiser truly has no equal. While the hull demonstrates Pollack’s expertise in steel fabrication, the rest of the vessel—equipment, interior finish, deck layout, sail configuration—are a unique combination only found on Mentor.
When the original owners of the unfinished hull were unable to fully build and commission this Amazon 44, her current owners took the reins in 2003 with a weather eye turned towards what they wanted in a world voyaging yacht. With decades of cruising experience, they started building-out the vessel to their exacting standards and in 2007, they launched.
Mentor first cast off her lines for a shakedown cruising and then set sail for warmer climes—Mexico, Central America, through the Panama Canal and on to the east coast of the United States. Since that maiden voyage, she has returned to the Pacific Northwest, ably plying the waters of the Salish Sea, Inside Passage and Southeast Alaska.
Throughout the miles, what has stood out about this exception cruiser has been her overall rugged build, sea-kindly manor, complete cruising systems, easy handling and comfortable interior. That, and she’s a delight under sail.
While her pedigree and overall sailing resume is representative of a bone fide blue water cruiser, it’s her overall design that is perfectly complimented by exhaustive personal touches from her knowledgable owners that really sets Mentor apart from the pack. Her aluminum dodger provides excellent protection from the elements and all navigational equipment is within sight and arms reach.
Her deck layout and sail handling systems were designed and setup specifically for ease-of-use by and for a cruising couple that would be undertaking long passages and completing extended coastal cruises.
A raised salon and dinette affords an excellent view from the main cabin, but also bathes the interior in a lot of natural light. And to match her stout hull, Mentor’s fixed window glazing in the raised house has been replaced with 1-inch thick tempered clear glass (two laminated ½-inch layers).
The overall outfitting or her interior, coupled with robust system design and placement, is superb, exuding quality construction and thoughtful maintenance throughout it’s lifetime. A workshop in the port quarter is functional yet handy. Her interior finish in Honduran mahogany and yellow cedar is first rate. And her layout is ideal for a couple, but could also be suitable for a small family.
While the list of Mentor’s superlative qualities can go on and on, she truly is an exceptional cruising yacht that has to be seen to be truly be appreciated. View Mentor’s full specifications here. Or contact us for more information.
