Merlin is a classic lobster style cruiser designed by Karl Stambaugh NA of Chesapeake Marine Designs. She was built by master shipwright Jim Lions at Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op in 2008 for long time sailors.
Her construction method is glue and stainless screws with various woods. Her wood choices include red Maranti, Aquatek, Keruing, Teak, Okoume, White Pine, Doug Fir, Sapele, Mahogany and Jatoba. All exterior surfaces are hand overlaid with epoxy/fiberglass. She is 35-feet long with a 10-foot beam and 3-foot draft.
Merlin was a once in a lifetime project for her owners, who are now getting out of boating. She has been lightly used and is a wonderfully safe cruising boat for a couple or a small family. Her deep cockpit lends itself very well to fishing and having children or pets aboard. The cockpit coamings are chest high and the cabin door opens “Dutch style” for safety.
Merlin has a single Yanmar diesel and a bow thruster for very efficient cruising and maneuverability. Plenty of freeboard provides a dry ride and the swim-step allows for entry from the dinghy. Her cabin has great visibility and is clean in design. Her head/shower has a composting AirHead for even greater simplicity.
If you are looking for an easy to maintain but elegant lobster style boat, Merlin is worth a look.
